Míškovice – Church, Nature and Local Traditions

Church, Chapel and Evidence of Local History

The Church of Saint Anthony of Padua is at the centre of the area’s architectural history. It is registered as an immovable cultural monument and was built between 1922 and 1927 to a design by the architect František Lydie Gahura, who came from Zlín. The constructivist building from 1927 is significant in the history of modern architecture. The church was consecrated on 29 June 1928. Inside, notable surviving features include a stained-glass window depicting Saint Anthony and a Way of the Cross with high reliefs.

Another distinctive site is the late Baroque Chapel of Saint Florian, dating from the late 18th century and registered as an immovable cultural monument. It stands at the crossroads of the roads to Mysločovice and Machová, next to the cemetery. The cemetery itself was established in 1928 to a design by František Lydie Gahura. The monument to the victims of the First World War stands in front of its entrance gate.

There are also smaller monuments: a stone statue of Saint Joseph from 1895 stands in the village square. The stone statue of Our Lady of Lourdes dates from 1891 and is located south of the cemetery on the road to Mysločovice. Together with the church and chapel, these sites form a cultural focal point particularly suited to a trip focused on sacred architecture, regional history and individual historical details.

Archaeological Traces and Landscape

The history of the area extends far beyond its visible buildings. Křemenná near Míškovice is a significant archaeological site from the Early Stone Age. A burial ground of the Nitra culture dating from the beginning of the Bronze Age was also discovered there. These two findings offer a glimpse into very different eras and give the place a historical depth that extends beyond the more recent history of the village.

The Kurovický lom nature monument lies in the landscape around Kurovice, Tlumačov, Míškovice and Machová. Cycle Route No. 5271 passes by the nearby Kurovický lom, and bicycle racks are available at the entrance. This makes it possible to combine an interest in nature and the regional landscape with a specific cycling connection, without limiting the excursion to a single cultural destination.

Between Míškovice and Machová, the Potoky pond system, together with the surrounding field copses, forms a biocorridor and provides a habitat for many animals. In the cadastral area of Míškovice, the BK–25 biocorridor, including ponds N1, N2 and N3, was also restored from 2000 onwards. Local Festivals and Regional Impressions

The annual calendar includes various events. Every year at the end of summer, the local small-animal breeders’ association holds small-animal exhibitions. In Míškovice, the Czech Gardening Association holds an exhibition of fruit, vegetables and flowers, as well as a slivovitz tasting. Celebrations in honour of Saint Florian take place on 4 May. These traditions complement the historical sights with the communal and agricultural aspects of the village.
