Zdounky combines remarkable cultural monuments with a regional hiking network and the Kamenec natural monument, featuring warm slopes, juniper growth and thermophilous flora. Zdounky Castle and its historical details

Zdounky Castle is registered as an immovable cultural monument under registration number 37881/7-6188. At its southwestern corner, the four-winged building preserves the former tower of the original fortress. This means that the older history of the fortifications can also be read in the present-day complex, without separating the later building components from the castle’s historical development.

The ground-floor design is particularly characteristic: throughout the ground floor of Zdounky Castle, the rooms feature Baroque vaulted ceilings. In the oldest southern section, an original chapel with a Renaissance vault has also been preserved. Those interested in architecture will therefore find different historical forms within a single building: the former tower of the original fortress, Baroque vaults and the Renaissance chapel.

Church of the Holy Trinity: Gothic origins and a Renaissance tombstone

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Zdounky is originally Gothic and was first mentioned in 1366. Its church tower was enlarged in 1570. The church stands on a steep slope near the town center in an enclosed area; this setting is as much part of its local character as its architectural history.

At the Church of the Holy Trinity there is a figurative and heraldic Renaissance stone tombstone for Jan Jiří Zoubek ze Zdětína. The work is considered a unique example in Moravia. In addition to its early mention and Gothic origins, the church therefore possesses an outstanding detail of Renaissance art.

Hiking along ridges with views of the Chřiby Hills

For active days, Zdounky offers the Stezky severními Chřiby trail network. The local tourist routes connect Kroměříž, Zdounky, Kostelany, Kvasice and municipalities within this area. The routes are intended primarily for hiking; most can also be used by mountain bikes. This makes it possible to accommodate different forms of travel without limiting the network to a single activity.

One of the described routes runs along two ridges and offers wide views of Kroměříž and the surrounding area, the Hostýnské vrchy hills and, above all, the Chřiby Hills. Another route runs for 13.6 km through Zdounky, Nětčice, Šelešovice and Soběsuky. These two details show different possibilities within the documented trail network: one route emphasizing elevation and panoramic views, and a clearly measured route through several villages.

Thermophilous nature at Kamenec

The Kamenec natural monument also adds to the picture of Zdounky. It features warm slopes with juniper growth and thermophilous flora. Numerous thermophilous insect species live in Kamenec and its surroundings; the occurrence of the protected European mantis is particularly noteworthy. Culture, hiking trails and the natural monument each add their own emphasis to travel planning.
