Rymice

Rymice combines a Renaissance fortress, a church dating from 1786, and an open-air museum with seven examples of folk architecture. In addition, the district of Hejnice is home to a German post mill made entirely of wood. Traditional village architecture in Hejnice

Hejnice, a district of Rymice, was declared a village heritage reserve in 1995. This protection is particularly evident in three preserved smallholder farmsteads: houses No. 62, 64, and 65 have been preserved as a group. With the three farmsteads and the windmill, Hejnice brings together rural architecture and a mill made entirely of wood in the same location.

House No. 64 is called “U Vymětalů” and contains a black kitchen with a hearth and bread oven.

Fortress, church, and open-air museum

Rymice itself is home to the Renaissance fortress, considered the oldest surviving building in the municipality. It was opened to the public in 2006. The year refers to its opening to the public, not to the date when the Renaissance fortress was built. Its historical period adds a significantly older structure to the more recent evidence of the village’s history and gives the area another historical focal point.

The Church of Saint Bartholomew stands in the centre of Rymice. It was built in 1786, giving it a distinct character within the village landscape. With its construction date of 1786, the church belongs to a later period than the Renaissance fortress. The fortress and the church represent different historical themes: the Renaissance fortress as the oldest surviving building in the municipality on the one hand, and the sacral building from the late 18th century on the other.

The Rymice open-air museum comprises seven examples of folk architecture from eastern Haná. It thus broadens the perspective from individual houses to a whole selection of regional architectural forms. When planning a trip, visitors can therefore choose between a focused visit to the fortress and church and a more in-depth exploration of folk architecture.

The Hejnice windmill and a cycling route

Hejnice is home to a German post mill made entirely of wood and dating from the first half of the 19th century. In 1977, it was moved to Rymice from nearby Bořenovice. The mill turns on a central post, allowing its sails to be positioned towards the wind.
