Koryčany – Discover Culture, Hiking and Nature

In the surroundings of Koryčany lies Kazatelna, a viewpoint overlooking the Kyjovka Valley and the opposite ridge of the Chřibské hřbety. Here, you can combine a château garden that is open to visitors year-round, significant cultural monuments and a clearly described hike. Cultural Monuments from Different Periods

Koryčany Château is a Baroque château built after 1677. The building itself is not open to the public, but its well-maintained garden can be visited year-round. The château park covers 2.8 hectares and therefore offers a destination in its own right, even when a château tour is not possible.

A special feature of the town’s history is Thonetova vila. It was built in 1896 based on a design by the Vienna-based Fellner & Helmer studio and was declared a cultural monument by the Czech Ministry of Culture in March 2023. The parish church dedicated to Saint Lawrence, first mentioned in 1350, contains a life-size Gothic wooden statue of the Virgin Mary dating from around the end of the 14th century.

The Jewish cemetery is also one of Koryčany’s defining cultural sites. It contains more than 200 gravestones; the oldest surviving gravestone dates from 1674. In the 1990s, the cemetery was classified as a state-protected cultural monument. Thus, Koryčany brings together evidence from several centuries, from medieval church art to the architectural and commemorative culture of the modern era.

A Hike from Koryčany to Osvětimany

The “Přechod Chřibů z Koryčan do Osvětiman” hiking route begins at the car service centre in Koryčany and ends in Osvětimany. Including a visit to Cimburk Castle, it is 14 kilometres long and takes five hours. Along the route, steps carved into the rock lead to Kazatelna Rock. For this hike, the journey from Kroměříž to Koryčany is made by a bus operated by the Integrated Transport of the Zlín Region (IDZK).

Kazatelna lies in the surroundings of Koryčany and is a sandstone rock protruding from the slope. From there, the view extends over the Kyjovka Valley to the opposite ridge of the Chřibské hřbety, Cimburk Castle and part of the Koryčanská Reservoir. The route thus combines a defined hiking trail with a natural viewpoint whose distinctive features are already apparent from the steps carved into the rock.

Landscape, Traditions and Clear Boundaries

Nearby lies Moravanské lúky, a complex of forest meadows and small forest clearings with a total area of 8.72 hectares. The area was designated a nature reserve on 28 October 1990. Swimming is prohibited at the Koryčanská Reservoir because the entire reservoir lies within drinking-water protection zone 1. The surroundings therefore represent not only viewpoints and hiking, but also a clearly protected water area.

The regional calendar also includes recurring traditions: Every year during the Whitsun holidays, a traditional pilgrimage takes place nearby at Hora svatého Klimenta. The traditional Koryčanská pouť is held on the first weekend of September. Depending on the type of trip you want, you can therefore combine your stay with cultural sites, a longer hike or an event from the annual calendar.
