Černovice: Hiking Trails, Viewpoints and Culture

Černovice combines a waterside location with wooded slopes and a distinctive sacred landmark. The town lies at the confluence of two branches of the Černovický potok and on the southern slope of the 739-metre-high Svidník mountain. Marked hiking trails lead into the wooded slopes around Černovice. As a result, exploration does not begin only at a single destination: waterways, ridges and paths form part of the immediate character of the place. For a stay, the focus can therefore be divided between longer stretches of trail, individual viewpoints and culture. Černovické vyhlídky comprises six viewpoints. Each one has a bench and distinctive signage made from a forked tree trunk. The viewpoints are connected by a 22-kilometre route that follows the contour lines. The connection itself is therefore an important part of the experience: those who place the entire route at the centre of their plans should take its length into account when planning their day; those looking for individual views can treat the viewpoints as standalone destinations. The bench and signage mark each viewpoint as a separate stop, while the continuous route forms a larger spatial unit.

Routes Through the Town and Surrounding Area

One route begins at the church bell tower and leads via Nádražní Street to Černovice railway station on the Jindřichův Hradec–Obrataň narrow-gauge railway. This route focuses on the town itself and complements the highland trails with a town route. Cyclists can also find a specific connection through the town: the Černovice–Svidník–Svatá Anna cycle route runs through Černovice; from the market square, the red-marked trail leads to the accessible Jewish cemetery. Thus, for day planning, a town route to the railway station and a cycling connection to the cemetery are available as distinct destinations.

Churches and Sacred Destinations in the Region

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a monumental single-nave building with a cruciform floor plan, a tower above the façade and side chapels. As a deanery church, it stands on the site of the former Chapel of Saint Catherine. Its present form and the earlier sacred site thus belong to two periods in the history of the same building. In the wider region around Černovice are Želivský Kláštor Monastery, the Church of Svatý Jan and the Church of Svatá Anna. These destinations extend the exploration of sacred sites beyond Černovice, while the local church provides its own architectural focus.
