Počátky – Heritage Zone, Museum and Springs
Počátky is a destination for travellers who want to discover the history of a town not only through individual sights, but also through a preserved town centre. At its heart is the municipal heritage zone: designated in 1990, it protects the historic town centre with its elongated square. It is complemented by a long-established museum, the birthplace of the poet Otokar Březina, a High Baroque church and a special destination approximately 3.5 kilometres away. In this way, the town combines urban culture with an additional discovery in the surrounding area.
Historic town centre with a distinctive structure
The municipal heritage zone of Počátky primarily protects the historic town centre with its elongated square. It includes Baroque and Neoclassical town houses as well as preserved parts of the original town structure. The heritage zone should therefore be understood as an ensemble of the square, town houses and the traditional town layout, rather than as protection for just a single building. For a walking tour, this means that the historic character is evident not only in individual façades, but also in the preserved layout of the town. The present-day High Baroque Church of St Catherine, built around 1730, provides another historical accent.
Museum, literature and film history
The Počátky Town Museum opened to the public in 1893 and is considered the oldest publicly accessible museum in its region. In the “Měšťanský pokoj”, the Počátky Town Museum displays furniture, valuable glass and porcelain objects, portraits of the Brdlík family, a tiled stove and children's toys. The collection ranges from household and domestic objects to family portraits and children's toys. The birthplace of the poet Otokar Březina additionally provides an introduction to the town's literary history; it has been open to the public since 1949. Unlike the collection in the town museum, the literary connection is tied to the birthplace itself. Film enthusiasts will also find a connection of their own: Počátky served as a filming location for scenes from “Postřižiny”.
Springs, educational trail and an unusual excursion destination
The healing springs in the immediate vicinity of Počátky contributed to the establishment of the Svatá Kateřina water-treatment and climate spa. The “K pramenům Počátek a okolí” educational trail is also marked out in Počátky. The springs complement the built sights with a connection to the immediate surroundings of Počátky. Thus, the springs and the educational trail are located in the immediate vicinity of Počátky, while the stone circle is a separate destination approximately 3.5 kilometres away. The “Kamenný kruh druidů” is a unique replica of Stonehenge and a tourist attraction; it is located approximately 3.5 kilometres from Počátky.
