The U Bezděčína natural monument is located within the cadastral territory of Obrataň. It protects a spring structure as well as a stream floodplain with specially protected species. The Josafatské Valley also extends through the nearby area for approximately 8 km along the Bělá stream, connecting Sudkův Důl, Bezděčín and Údolí. The ruins of the small Údolský hrádek fortress, dating from the 14th century, rise above a pond there.
The Narrow-Gauge Railway as a Distinctive Feature of the Village
A separate chapter in the village’s history is the narrow-gauge railway from Obrataň to Jindřichův Hradec, built in 1906. It is 46 km long and has a gauge of 760 mm. The line is a tourist attraction and also serves regular transport. For travel planning, this combination is more remarkable than a purely heritage railway: the railway is part of both the village’s historical character and its documented transport service.
At Sudkův Důl station, there is a romantically situated forest stop on the narrow-gauge railway. It is an attraction for anyone interested in railway history and landscapes. Cycle route 1185 also passes through Obrataň; the Museum of Insulators and Lightning Conductors, located in a former mill in the settlement of Dvořiště, connects this subject with another destination. The museum is 2.5 km from Obrataň and lies on cycle route 1185.
Village History and Small Cultural Attractions
In the village centre stands the Church of St Peter and Paul, formerly known as the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It was founded in 1384 on a rise in the middle of the village square. Near the church is the T. G. Masaryk monument, created by the Tábor sculptor Jan Vítězslav Dušek. A small Neoclassical chapel with a bell turret was built around 1800.
The wooden granary in Obrataň is another notable historic building. It dates from the late 18th century and is one of the last surviving buildings of the region’s timber-frame vernacular architecture. Together with the church, chapel and monument, it forms a cultural focal point that is not limited to a single large building but encompasses several smaller features of the village.
