Šimanov – Nature at Strážník

Šimanov combines an elevated location at the foot of Strážník with two distinct natural areas and surroundings that are suitable for hikes and walks. For families looking for varied landscapes rather than a purely sightseeing-focused itinerary, a moor, wet meadows, woodland and expansive views are all found close together here. At the same time, visitors can discover special natural features, including rare plants and protected animal species.

The Šimanovské rašeliniště south of the village

The Šimanovské rašeliniště nature reserve is located within the municipality of Šimanov. It lies approximately 500 metres south of Šimanov and is a valley and slope spring fen covering around 4 hectares at approximately 605 metres above sea level. These approximate figures are part of the character of the landscape: the fen lies somewhat lower than the village itself and forms a clearly defined natural area. The presence of the critically endangered moss species Meesia triquetra is particularly notable. Its local population consists of only a few dozen stems. Those interested in smaller natural features that are easy to overlook will therefore find not only an open landscape here, but also a specific botanical focal point.

Hajnice below Strážník

The Hajnice natural area lies approximately 500 metres northwest of Šimanov, below Strážník. It covers around 18 hectares and is situated at approximately 660 metres above sea level. This natural area includes wet meadows, pastures, wetlands and a pond in the upper course of the Hejnický potok stream. Hajnice complements the moor south of the village with a different type of landscape. The area is home to protected animal and plant species, including the noble crayfish, common snipe and broad-leaved marsh orchid. This creates a destination for nature observation in which not only the size of a landscape but also its individual habitats play a role.

Elevation, woodland and expansive views

Šimanov lies at the foot of the 713-metre-high Strážník. The village is situated between 620 and 660 metres above sea level. The European watershed between the Elbe and Danube also runs along the edge of Šimanov. This geographical feature can be experienced alongside the hilly, largely forested surroundings, which offer expansive views and are suitable for hikes and walks in nature. Another option is the route “Through the Beech Forests to Větrný Jeníkov”. It follows the road towards Bílý Kámen and Šimanov as far as Větrný Jeníkov.
