Kněžice: Architectural History and Protected Landscape

Kněžice combines a long history with remarkable religious buildings, a protected beech stand and distinctive visitor experiences. The first written mention of Kněžice dates from 1222. This mention is considered the oldest written mention of a settlement in the wider Stonařovsko, Jihlavsko and Brtnicko area. Chapel with Late Baroque Furnishings

A particularly detailed testament is the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk in Kněžice. It was declared a cultural monument in the first quarter of 2024, including its movable furnishings. The building is a small late Baroque religious structure with a square floor plan and a polygonal termination to the south. Its modest size and clear basic form make the architectural design immediately comprehensible, while the furnishings provide an additional art-historical focus.

The chapel contains a life-size Baroque wooden statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It was probably created around 1723 by an artist who is unknown today and is considered a valuable example of contemporary craftsmanship. It is precisely the combination of the building, movable furnishings, specific date of origin and unknown authorship that gives the site more depth than a mere year. A Church Connected with Třebíč

The Church of Saint James the Greater also broadens Kněžice’s historical profile. It probably dates from the 13th century. The oldest Romanesque part of the church comes from the same workshop as the Basilica of Saint Procopius in Třebíč. This explicitly documented connection places the oldest building section within a broader art-historical and architectural context without reducing the church to a single feature. Together with the late Baroque chapel, it creates a chronological arc from Romanesque origins to Baroque religious architecture.

U Trojáku and the Character of the Landscape

The U Trojáku Nature Reserve lies in the cadastral area of Kněžice u Třebíče. It protects an old beech stand at a site of fresh fir-beech forests. Thus, alongside the churches and chapel, a clearly described landscape type is also available for understanding the character of the place. The protected stand does not refer to nature in general, but specifically to old beech trees and the habitat of fresh fir-beech forests.

Another type of visit is offered by the Chaloupky Show Garden: you can visit it independently and free of charge. Commented tours are possible by prior arrangement for a fee agreed upon in advance. Independent visits and commented tours are therefore two clearly distinct formats. The Bike Maraton Kněžice also represents the active side of the area’s profile. It has been organized by CykloKlub Kněžice for many years. Cycling therefore appears here as a specific, long-established event focus rather than merely a general theme.
