Urbanov – Church, Cultural Landscape and Cycle Paths
Urbanov is a destination for you if you would like to combine a small village with distinctive sacred buildings, cultural and historical details, and landscape experiences. The Church of St John the Baptist is particularly prominent: it stands on a spur above the river and overlooks the surrounding landscape. This gives the village a clear landscape and cultural centre, which already provides guidance when choosing the focus of your holiday.
Church and Historical Landmarks
According to the assessment of historian Prof. Dr Václav Richtr, the Church of St John the Baptist was founded between 1220 and 1230. Its location above the river makes the connection between the building and its surroundings immediately clear. The church complex also includes the boundary wall of the former medieval cemetery. Those interested in historic village landscapes will therefore find not just a single building here, but an ensemble with a visibly preserved history.
The other sacred monuments in Urbanov include the Chapel of St Barbara. The small late Baroque building is located in the boundary wall of the former cemetery. Its rectangular floor plan ends on three sides, the entrance has a round-arched vault, and a small bell tower crowns the hipped roof.
Smaller individual monuments also add to the cultural character. The statue of St John of Nepomuk was erected and consecrated on 17 September 1729. A valuable Baroque statue of the same saint stands in the square in front of the church complex in Urbanov. Different forms can be seen among the crosses: the cross in Urbanov is described as a rare, high-quality wrought-iron work with rich Baroque and Rococo ornamentation on a high stone pedestal. The village landscape also includes a Neoclassical work from 1825, surrounded by a stone balustrade enclosure.
Landscape and Active Exploration
For holidays with an active element, marked cycle paths run through Urbanov. This is a specific point of reference for anyone choosing accommodation not solely according to sights, but also according to opportunities for exploring on two wheels. Stráň v Urbanově provides a distinctive natural feature and is registered as an important landscape element (VKP). Its shallow soils support relatively species-poor vegetation with a high proportion of comparatively drought- and warmth-loving species. This landscape element therefore allows visitors to observe a different aspect of the local natural environment than the historic buildings offer.
Getting There and Choosing Other Destinations
Transport connections are also relevant when considering Urbanov as a holiday destination. Class II road II/403 from Kouty to Telč runs through Urbanov. The village is also served by public bus services.
If you would like to compare other places for your search, you can also consider Panenska Rozsicka, Hostětice, Zdeňkov, Ždírec, Vyskytná Nad Jihlavou, Brtnice, Doupě and Trest.
