Batelov Between Baroque, History and Landscapes

Batelov combines remarkable cultural monuments with opportunities for cycling, horseback riding and winter activities. This creates a destination where you can balance historical discoveries and outdoor activities in different ways. The parish church of St. Peter and Paul is particularly prominent: the Baroque church was built between 1755 and 1761 in place of a Gothic church that had already been mentioned in 1400. Castles and Historic Townscapes

One of the cultural attractions is the Starý a Nový zámek complex in Batelov. It is protected as an immovable cultural monument under registration number ÚSKP 33201/7-4679. A cycling route via Spělov to Batelov also highlights that the old and new castles stand next to each other in the town center. Batelov Castle itself is a two-storey Renaissance building. It is surrounded by a park through which the Jihlava River flows. Jewish Heritage with Tangible Traces

Batelov’s Jewish quarter lies on the northeastern edge of the historic town center, on Třešťská Street. It originally comprised 16 houses, including a school. A memorial to the victims of the Holocaust was erected nearby in 1995. There is also a synagogue on Židovský plácek, built in the Neoclassical style in 1794.

Another historical trace leads to the Jewish cemetery. It lies on a hill west of the town and is also hidden in a deciduous forest near Batelov. Simple Baroque and Neoclassical gravestones can be found there; the oldest dates from 1715. The gravestones recall the former Jewish presence in the town. For your visit, this offers a quieter cultural focus that differs clearly from the representative castle and church buildings.

Cycling, Horseback Riding and Winter Activities

Anyone wishing to explore Batelov actively will find a specific cycling circuit starting right in the town: the “Na kole do Jihlavských vrchů” route begins in Batelov’s square, is 31 km long and is classified as difficulty level 2. Another cycling route leads via Spělov to Batelov and connects its description with the historic town center and the old and new castles standing next to each other there. This allows sporting activities and cultural themes to be combined in different ways, without the same type of outing having to be the focus.

Koně Batelov offers horseback riding excursions for all age groups, either in an enclosure or in the countryside. For travelers with different interests, this is another way to shape their stay around more than just sightseeing. During the winter months, Koně Batelov also offers skijoring. The documented range therefore extends from historical sites for walks and a designated cycling route to horseback riding and winter activities.
