Závist between the Village Green and Deep Forests

Závist is a destination for travellers who want to experience Czech village culture as more than just a backdrop. On the village green, a bell tower, a Christmas tree and the maypole are at the heart of local traditions; at the same time, Závist provides access to nearby deep forests and unspoilt nature for relaxation. When choosing accommodation, the key consideration is therefore the desired combination of village events, nature and transport connections.

A marked cycle route runs along the northern edge of the cadastral area: Cycle Route 5221 provides a clear point of reference for anyone who wants to explore Závist by bicycle. The situation is different for hiking: no marked hiking trail runs through the cadastral area. Those looking for accommodation with a focus on cycling will therefore find a designated connection here, while hikes are not served by a marked local trail.

Bell Tower, Chapel and Well

The history of the village can be seen within a small area. The brick bell tower in Závist was built in 1833 by Mariana Šumanová, the widow of a local innkeeper, and dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It was extensively renovated in 2014. Next to the chapel stands a stone cross bearing the year 1857; its design features stone symbolism of the Holy Trinity.

Another point of reference is the round well. It was renovated in 2000 and continues to receive water from the former municipal water supply. Its sources were located above the village. The word “former” refers to the history of the water supply and should not be confused with a statement about its current use or drinkability.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The village festivals take place on the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity. Cultural events organised by the library under the auspices of the municipality include, among others, a kite festival and a St Nicholas celebration several times a year. A St Nicholas celebration or a witches’ bonfire is held regularly for children.

The village green is also an important event venue. The traditional Christmas gathering of residents takes place at the Christmas tree and includes its ceremonial lighting as well as a performance by children. As part of local traditions, a maypole is also erected there. These events give the village a clear seasonal rhythm, without allowing a specific date for a future trip to be inferred.

The largest social events of the year in Závist are the Masopust procession and Závistské hody. A traditional Masopust procession featured original masks and humorous scenes. The procession followed a circular route through Závist and included stops for refreshments. The experience therefore centres not only on a single festival site, but on a tour through the village.

Travel Connections and Local Districts

In the built-up part of Závist, there is a bus stop on Road I/43 with bus bays and a shelter. It is connected to the village by a separate pavement or footpath. The heavily trafficked Road I/43 divides Závist into two local districts and makes it more difficult to cross safely between them.

The nearest railway station is in Rájec-Jestřebí, approximately 10 km away, on ČD railway line No. 260 between Prague, Česká Třebová and Brno. The bus connection in the built-up part and the railway station in the neighbouring town therefore provide two different reference points for arriving.
