Svinošice between Hiking Trails and Village History

Svinošice is a starting point for hikes, nature observation and discoveries in the village. The yellow-marked hiking trail to Babí lom starts here. At the same time, the chapel, wayside shrine, memorials and today’s cultural centre recall the history of the village. Hiking and Nature around Svinošice

The Babí lom observation tower is 15 metres high, freely accessible and can be reached from Svinošice via the yellow hiking trail, 4.3 kilometres away. South of the village are also the protected area of Spálená skála and the Babí lom Nature Reserve. There, a rocky ridge covered by natural forest and gravelly conglomerates shape the landscape. This combination makes the trail an interesting choice for anyone who wants to combine a hike with a specific destination.

Shorter or differently themed excursions are also part of the surrounding area. The Babí lom forestry educational trail is just under 2 kilometres long and has a total of 10 information boards. At Lelkovadlo, a wooden sculpture, there is a rest area with benches and a covered shelter. The educational trail of Lesy města Brna begins about 500 metres from there. It explains the journey of a tree from seed to the wood products made from it.

In the eastern part of Svinošice lies the recently reconstructed Luhy locality, with a rest area and a fire pit. From the rest area, you can reach the Šebrovka waterfall. For a longer hike, the ruins of Nový hrad are a good option: from Svinošice, the route initially follows the yellow hiking trail to the U Jelínka trail junction and then continues along the red hiking trail. The entire route is 10.6 kilometres long.

Village History and Notable Details

The Chapel of the Holy Family was built at the end of the 19th century. A cast-iron cross on a stone pedestal has stood beside it since 1871. In the upper part of the village, on the road to Šebrov, there is also a state-protected cultural monument in the form of a wayside shrine. A war memorial from 1921 on the village square commemorates the victims of the First World War from Svinošice. The pedestal was later supplemented with a marble plaque bearing the names of three victims of the Second World War.

An older historical trace leads to a medieval fortress documented for the years 1373 to 1437. It disappeared sometime in the second half of the 15th century. A memorial plaque to headmaster Bohumil Vařílek has been located in the former school building, now the cultural centre, since 1945. Such small reminders scattered throughout the village add an extra historical dimension to a walk through Svinošice.

Traditions and Suitable Trip Planning

The traditions mentioned in Svinošice include the August kroj festivals, known in Czech as krojované hody, as well as a carnival procession through the village. There is also a tasting competition for the best slivovitz brandy, called “Svinošická švestka”. These customs complement the experience of nature and culture with a local perspective on community life and regional specialities.

Road II/379 from Blansko to Brno runs through Svinošice in an east–west direction. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore first decide which experiences should be the focus: the observation tower and nature reserves, the educational trails and rest areas, the village history or a longer hike to the ruins of Nový hrad.
