Vrbice Among Wine Cellars and Cultural Heritage

Vrbice combines unusual wine architecture with local history and a 30-kilometre route through several towns. Wine Cellars and Regional Traditions

The wine cellars of the Stráž cellar locality are carved into the sandstone of the hill across seven levels. The older Na Sklepech wine-cellar colony reflects a different historical character. It was established in the second half of the 17th century and consists mainly of stone multi-storey buildings with recessed press houses and long vaulted cellars.

In the Vrbice wine-cellar colony, you can taste Neuburg, Tramín and Vlašský ryzlink wines. This allows you to discover the area not only through its architectural forms but also through specific regional specialities.

Churches, Chapel and Museum

The Church of St Giles was built by the Brotherhood of St Giles between 1913 and 1920 on the summit of Stráž Hill. The Chapel of St Anne dates from 1870, was restored to its original form in 2004 and serves as a place for relaxation and contemplation. It therefore creates a different atmosphere from the church, which is also used for numerous community and cultural events.

The Vrbice Municipal Museum is located in the former town hall, the oldest building in the municipality. It presents the history of the municipality and, through exhibitions and projects concerning traditional costumes, also shows aspects of the present day. The museum is open on selected holidays—Easter, the local festival and Christmas—or by prior arrangement. For planning a cultural stop, one of these festive periods or a prior arrangement is therefore essential.

The church in Vrbice is used not only for regular services but also for weddings, baptisms, funerals, concerts, a Living Nativity, open days and other smaller celebrations. Its range of uses therefore extends from regular services to cultural and community events.

Modré Hory Route for Hiking and Cycling

The 30-kilometre Modré Hory Route is suitable for hiking and cycling and connects Vrbice with Bořetice, Kobylí, Němčičky and Velké Pavlovice. Its detailed route leads via Velké Pavlovice, the Slunečná lookout tower, Bořetice, Vrbice, Kobylí, the Kraví hora wine cellars and Němčičky, returning to Velké Pavlovice. The route thus connects several municipalities with a viewpoint and further wine-producing towns; depending on your choice, hiking or cycling can take centre stage.

Shorter discoveries are also part of the local character: the wooden windmill of Vrbice near the cemetery is a replica of the town’s original windmills. The Hobitín visitor attraction is located directly in Vrbice. The windmill and Hobitín are therefore two separate destinations in the town, while the route provides the broader geographical connection.
