Podivín: Historic Places with Unusual Details

Podivín is an interesting destination if you would like to combine cultural monuments with distinctive architectural details and a clearly defined hike. The range extends from the Jewish cemetery with its national cultural monument to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. Janův hrad adds an artificial castle ruin in the middle of floodplain forests, while the Podivínské hody hold a firm place in local tradition. Jewish Cemetery and Cemetery Gate

The Jewish cemetery in Podivín was established in the second half of the 17th century. Its cemetery gate is a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Particularly noteworthy is the wrought-iron grille from the 16th century. It originally adorned the entrance to the Liechtensteins’ castle theater in Lednice, which no longer exists.

The perspective design of the cemetery gate creates the optical impression of an infinite space. The ceremonial hall also has a distinctive appearance: it is designed in an Oriental Romantic style and crowned by a dome with a lantern. The seasonal arrangement is important when planning a visit. From October to March, the Jewish cemetery is closed and accessible by prior arrangement with the Podivín Municipal Office.

Church of Saints Peter and Paul and Janův hrad

The construction of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul dates back to the first half of the 13th century. Its unusual Gothic Revival design makes it a prominent landmark, as the church is visible from the surrounding area. Together with the adjacent rectory and the Baroque statue of Saint Thecla, it is listed in the register of immovable cultural monuments of the Czech Republic.

Janův hrad presents a different historical form. The artificial castle ruin was built between 1807 and 1810 according to a design by Josef Hardtmuth. It is situated in the middle of floodplain forests on a spur of the Stará Dyje. Janův hrad is open to the public both outside and inside. This means that the focus here is not only on an unusual architectural form, but also on a clearly described visiting opportunity.

Hody and an Easy Hiking Route

The Podivínské hody, held in honor of Saints Peter and Paul, have taken place regularly on June 29 since 1976 and open the series of hody celebrations in Podluží. The program includes ceremonial processions and hody festivities. Those who visit Podivín around this date thus focus their stay on a local tradition, rather than only on individual buildings.

For an active day out, the easy hiking route “Od vlaku k vlaku – Z Podivína do Ladné” is described. It begins at Podivín railway station and ends after a little more than seven kilometers at a railway stop. The start and destination give the route a clear framework and distinguish it from a circular walk that returns to the same starting point.
