Velenov – Forest Landscape, Views and Regional History

Between Forest Landscape and Far-Reaching Views

Velenov lies beneath the peaks of the Drahanská vrchovina Highlands and is surrounded by extensive forests. The village combines a distinctive landscape with individual destinations where nature, water and regional history can be seen. This creates a travel destination that is not limited to a single attraction: along the eastern edge, the Orlový potok stream flows before emptying into a southeastern bay of the Boskovice Reservoir.

The Suchý recreational area and Sušský Pond are also located within the cadastral territory of Velenov. These two names add different water and recreational spaces to the landscape. Those choosing accommodation in Velenov will therefore find a place where the natural surroundings are just as useful for orienting their trip as the local cultural traces.

Viewpoint with Panorama and Fire Pit

One particularly specific point of orientation is the Vyhlídka na Číhátkách Ptáčníka Velena viewpoint. From this viewpoint, the panorama extends across the Českomoravská vysočina, Kunštátsko and Boskovicko regions to Boskovice Castle.

The Vyhlídka na Číhátkách Ptáčníka Velena viewpoint was opened to the public on 20 November 2010. The viewpoint also includes a fire pit where visitors can grill sausages under the designated conditions. For families, the combination of a far-reaching view and a specific place to spend time together may be especially appealing, without limiting the visit to a purely scenic experience.

Natural Environment and Traces of Earlier History

The Vratíkov Nature Reserve lies in the surrounding area west of Velenov. The area is a karst landscape with several inaccessible caves. This restriction is part of the character of the place: the caves are part of the landscape, but should not generally be understood as accessible visitor attractions.

There is also an important archaeological site in the vicinity of Sklep Cave. Tools used by Magdalenian hunters and bones of prehistoric animals were discovered there. The site adds a temporal dimension to the natural environment and also makes the area interesting for travellers who would like to combine landscapes with archaeology and prehistory.

Village History, Bell Tower and Local Symbols

In the centre of Velenov stands a municipal bell tower with a bell that was purchased after the war. Another architectural detail is House No. 10, which was built from hewn beams. At a wayside cross in Velenov, a white marble plaque on a sandstone base commemorates local history. Its inscription reads: “Věnován ke cti a chvále Boží od mládenců a pannen VELENOVSKÝCH 1914”.

Such individual testimonies give the village a different focus from the views and forest landscape. If, when choosing your accommodation, you would like to consider not only nature but also village history and visible local traditions, the bell tower, House No. 10 and the cross are among Velenov’s distinctive features.

Traditions and Events

Local experiences include the traditional November excursion “Pochod kolem katastru”, which follows the municipality’s cadastral boundary. The event thus makes direct reference to the territory of Velenov. The municipality’s events calendar also lists the “Pohár Drahanské vrchoviny – kola” for September; the date is recorded there for that month.

This year’s VESUF Fest takes place at Pastýřská louka between Suchý and Velenov. The festival offers more than 50 types of beer from over 20 small breweries throughout the weekend, as well as food. The event therefore complements the more landscape- and history-oriented impressions with a sociable local occasion.
