Rudice – Windmill, Karst and Excursion Routes

Rudice is a destination for travelers who want to combine nature, unusual landforms and regional culture. Particularly characteristic are the Dutch-type windmill, Rudické propadání, designated as a national natural monument, and a circular route to the Seč kaolin quarry. The focus is not limited to above-ground sights: Rudické propadání also leads to an exceptional cave system, although its underground spaces are not open to the public.

Windmill, Museum and Geopark

The Rudice windmill was built in 1865 by Matěj and Františka Ševčík. Its design is of the Dutch type, making it a distinctive cultural landmark of the village. Visitors to the windmill museum should plan for a particular form of tour: admission and viewing of the exhibits are possible only when accompanied by a guide.

A small geopark is located next to the windmill. It displays rock samples from the Moravian Karst and the Drahanská vrchovina. This creates a connection between the building and the region’s geological landscapes without requiring a major change of subject. The Chapel of Saint Barbara is another distinct detail of a visit to the village. It stands at the intersection of two avenues and consists of double-shell masonry: stone was used on the outside and brick on the inside.

Rudické propadání and the Colors of the Kaolin Quarry

The Rudické propadání–Býčí skála cave system has around 13 km of passages and is the second-longest cave system in the Czech Republic. This scale describes an underground world that cannot be equated with an ordinary walk. The underground spaces of Rudické propadání are not open to the public; visits are possible only in exceptional cases as part of speleological courses and accompanied by experienced instructors.

Above ground, a different geological impression can be gained at the Seč kaolin quarry. Its walls display white, yellow, orange and red hues caused by the kaolin deposits found there. This gives the excursion a clearly visible contrast to the underground dimension of the cave system.

Circular Trail and Climbing Opportunities

For a compact exploration, the excursion route “Do Rudice k větrnému mlýnu a ke kaolínovému lomu Seč” is designated. The circular trail is 6.5 km long and, as its name suggests, leads to the windmill and the Seč kaolin quarry. It thus offers a concrete way to combine two of Rudice’s defining themes in one route: technical or regional history and visible geology.

Climbing is permitted year-round on the rocks at Kolíbky – Slza, Podhradí and Hrad. When choosing accommodation in Rudice, this primarily means making a clear decision about your focus. The village suits a trip where a guided museum tour, a circular route, geological observations or time spent at designated climbing rocks are more important than a sightseeing program packed as densely as possible.
