Kunštát – Castle, Churches and Pottery

Kunštát is a destination for anyone who wants to discover cultural history not only through individual sights, but in a variety of forms. Kunštát Castle is at the center of it all and is one of the oldest aristocratic castles in Moravia. Kunštát Castle and Its Various Tours

The Kunštát castle complex is surrounded by a park and offers several thematically distinct ways to explore the history of the site. The tour “Reprezentační prostory jižního křídla” presents the domestic culture of the last aristocratic owners. The “Hrad” tour, by contrast, focuses on the oldest architectural development and the ownership history of the castle. Its stops are located in the castle courtyard, at the gate tower, in the castle palace, and in the Knights’ Hall.

The exhibition “V erbu tří pruhů” offers another perspective. It traces four centuries of family history against the backdrop of the history of Moravia. This means that a visit to the castle can be explored primarily through domestic culture, architectural and ownership history, or the development of a family.

Churches, Cemetery and Special Local History

Significant historical landmarks can also be found outside the castle. St. Stanislav’s Church was originally Gothic and was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1687. The Church of the Holy Spirit in the cemetery was rebuilt in 1738 and contains a family crypt belonging to the owners of the Kunštát estate. Another unusual feature is the Kunštát dog cemetery, regarded as a rare European phenomenon.

The Kunštát Municipal Information Centre houses a permanent exhibition on the history and present of pottery in the Kunštátsko region. A literary focus is provided by the Pamětní síň Františka Halase a Klementa Bochořáka, with a permanent exhibition on František Halas and Klement Bochořák. Every October, the Halasův Kunštát poetry evenings are held in honor of František Halas.

Walking and Cycling Routes in Kunštátsko

The varied landscape around Kunštát is crisscrossed by walking and cycling routes. For a walk, the “Zámecká zastavení” route is a good choice. It passes through the Panská zahrada, the castle game preserve, and the Habrůvka castle park. Along the route, there is a clear system of information boards, allowing the trail to connect the landscape with explanatory stops.

Those who prefer to explore the surroundings by bicycle will find a cycling tour for all age and ability groups in the Halasovo Kunštátsko Nature Park. Pottery and Experiences with Children

The Hrnčířský jarmark includes demonstrations at the potter’s wheel. There is also a creative workshop for children. Together with the permanent pottery exhibition at the information centre, this creates a distinctive thematic way to experience Kunštát: you can not only view the region’s craft tradition, but also experience it in practical form at an event.
