Věteřov: Klobouk Burgstall, Museum and Cycling Route

Věteřov combines historical traces, local cultural heritage and a distinctive landscape in a compact destination. This creates a place where different interests can be combined: the Burgstall and religious buildings stand alongside museum exhibits, a wine route, a cycling route and Babí lom Hill.

Historical Traces in Věteřov

In the Na Valech locality, an impressive Burgstall with remains of fortifications and ramparts has been preserved; it is known as Klobouk. The partially preserved Na Valech Burgstall includes an outer bailey as well as two ditches and ramparts. This makes the site one of the clearest historical points of reference in the area, even though its history is not told through a fully preserved castle complex.

The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius presents a different picture. It was built in 1902. The local architectural history also includes a Baroque chapel from the 18th century. It is surrounded by mature linden trees and features folk elements. The church and chapel thus represent two clearly distinct periods in the local architectural history.

Museum and Routes for Different Travel Themes

The museum in Věteřov displays numerous exhibits that recall the lives of the ancestors of the local population. The exhibits broaden the perspective from the preserved buildings to the lives of earlier generations in the village. The opening arrangements are important when planning a museum visit: the museum is open during festive occasions or by telephone appointment with the museum staff or the mayor. In this way, local everyday history takes center stage alongside the visible buildings.

Věteřov combines a wine route with a cycling route. The Kyjov Wine Trail enters the village near the church. A section in Věteřov also forms part of the second cycling route, “Around the Mill Sails to Babí lom Hill.” Thus, Věteřov offers two different routes for wine and cycling side by side.

There is a covered IDS JMK bus stop in the center of Věteřov.

Babí lom and the Landscape’s History

Locally, the 417 m-high Babí lom is also called Babylon; it is the highest hill in the surrounding area. Cockle shells found on Babylon are regarded as evidence that, in earlier times, the cadastral territory of Věteřov was covered by the sea up to an elevation of 500 m. The two elevation figures refer to different things: 417 m is the height of the hill, while 500 m marks the former elevation up to which the cadastral territory of Věteřov was covered by the sea. The two values therefore do not describe the same elevation.
