Tvořihráz: Forest, Cultural Monuments and Trails

Tvořihráz combines protected nature, historical traces and trails for active exploration. The Tvořihrázský Forest, the château with its farmyard and several cultural monuments are the main highlights. At the same time, a green-marked hiking trail and two designated cycling routes pass through the village or its more specifically described surroundings. If you would like to combine nature experiences with history on your trip, Tvořihráz offers several different points of interest.

The Tvořihrázský Forest: Nature and Traces of the Past

The Tvořihrázský Forest is a Natura 2000 site of European importance. The area protects oak-hornbeam forests as well as habitats of the stag beetle, the great capricorn beetle and the barbastelle bat. The importance of the forest therefore lies not only in its landscape, but also in the special habitats preserved there.

The forest also contains preserved burial mounds, historic hollow ways, ponds and boundary stones. These features make the forest a place where natural surroundings and inherited traces of the landscape come together. This combination is particularly appealing for a multi-generational stay: alongside walking through the forest, there are specific historical details to discover, without the visit being limited to a single building.

Château, Chapel and Wine Cellars

The château with its farmyard gives Tvořihráz a distinctive historical character. It was originally a fortress that the Znojmo Dominicans converted into their summer residence at the end of the 17th century. The Chapel of Saint Dominic is located beside the château. Sunday services are still held there today.

The history of the site also includes the extensive wine cellars built in 1694. For a long time, sacramental wine was produced there and transported to all Dominican monasteries in the country. This connection between the fortress, religious use, the chapel and wine production gives the historic ensemble several distinct themes. You can therefore view the site not merely as an individual historic monument, but as the setting for a history of use that developed over several centuries.

Cultural Monuments in the Village and Along the Trails

The designated cultural monuments in Tvořihráz include the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. The wayside shrine on the road to Horní Dunajovice is also designated as a cultural monument. The hamlet of Loucký mlýn on the Jevišovka is another attraction and monument belonging to Tvořihráz. Together with the château and the historic traces in the forest, these features create a village landscape where small monuments, trails and larger historic complexes stand side by side.

Hiking and Cycling in Different Formats

For a hike, a green-marked trail leads from Znojmo through Tvořihráz and continues via Plaveč to Hluboké Mašůvky. When cycling, you can choose between routes with different characteristics: the approximately 45-kilometre Cyklookruh Mikroregionem Moravia passes through Tvořihráz and runs partly on paved roads and partly on natural trails. The Mlynářská stezka also passes through Tvořihráz on its section in the Znojmo region.
