Churches, chapels and monuments make Hrádek’s layered history visible. Its traces reach from the princely border castle of the 11th century and a commandery of the Knights Hospitaller in the 13th century to sacred buildings and sculptures of the 18th century. Nature is also part of the picture: the Jaroslavické rybníky Bird Protection Area extends, among other places, across the cadastral area of Hrádek u Znojma. In the wider region, the season-dependent section of the Dyje from Znojmo to Hrádek is another feature.

Castle, Ossuary and Church: Hrádek’s Historical Layers

A princely border castle stood in Hrádek in the 11th century; in the 13th century, a commandery of the Knights Hospitaller was located by the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. The Chapel of St. Oldřich is thought to date from the 13th century. As a late Romanesque ossuary, it is the only building that recalls the Přemyslid border castle. The border castle, commandery and ossuary thus represent different historical reference points: they tell the story of several eras, not a single construction phase.

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul combines a long history with a clearly dated Baroque building phase. It is documented as far back as 1227; the Baroque church was built from 1764 to 1767, replacing an older church. It was consecrated on June 22, 1767. The core of the older tower and an adjoining section of the north side aisle have been preserved. Thus, alongside its construction dates, two older structural elements are also part of its history.

Outside Hrádek, about 200 metres along the road to Jaroslavice, stands the Chapel of St. Agnes of Bohemia. This Neo-Gothic building, with a square floor plan, dates from the early 20th century and is now dedicated to this saint. In style and period, the chapel makes a different impression from the late Romanesque ossuary and the Baroque Church of Saints Peter and Paul. Together, they illustrate three different architectural forms and eras.

Statues, Wayside Shrines and Sculptures

The smaller monuments also have specific dates. The statue of St. Florian stands among large trees in the southeastern part of the square in Hrádek. It dates from 1757 and was restored in 2000. Opposite the school stands the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, dating from the mid-18th century; it was restored in 1999. The locations in the square and by the school give each figure its own local context.

Other wayside shrines and a sculpture group complete the picture. At the edge of the village toward Dyjákovice stands a wayside shrine dating from 1695, restored in 2002. Near a wine cellar is the wayside shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows, dating from 1788; it was restored in 2003. Below the church stands the sculpture group “Christ’s Farewell to the Virgin Mary,” dating from 1789 and restored in 2005. The square, school, wine cellar, village outskirts and area below the church are thus distinct settings for Hrádek’s monuments.

Bird Protection Area and the Dyje

The Jaroslavické rybníky Bird Protection Area extends through the South Moravian Region, including the cadastral area of Hrádek u Znojma. Its conservation objective covers the population of the Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) and its habitat. For nature lovers, this sets out a clear focus: a protected bird population and its habitat are at the centre. This specific nature conservation topic complements the village’s historic buildings and monuments.

In the wider region, the section of the Dyje from Znojmo to Hrádek is a slow-flowing river with picturesque meanders and a difficulty rating of ZW C. River conditions and navigability vary by season. The buildings are defined by firmly dated historical eras; on the Dyje, conditions change with the seasons. These are different considerations, each with its own role in travel planning.

If you are looking for hotels in Hrádek, use your preferred focus as a guide: for a culture-focused trip, the local churches, chapels and monuments take centre stage. If you also include the regional stretch of river, take its seasonal conditions into account when planning.
