Kadov – Natural Monument and Baroque Local History
Kadov lies in a flat valley of the Kadovský potok stream and in a sheltered location. The village combines this tranquil landscape setting with a remarkably rich sacred and local history. If you would like to combine nature observation, historical details and regional traditions on your trip, Kadov offers various points of interest: from Kadovská skála and Kadovský kopec to the church, cemetery gate, village square and the documented festival dates.
Natural surroundings around Kadov
Kadovská skála is located near Kadov. It is a former limestone quarry with a natural character and was designated a natural monument with effect from 1 June 2022. Numerous rare plants grow at Kadovská skála. This makes it a specific natural site whose current protected status and former use both contribute to an understanding of the landscape.
Above Kadov rises Kadovský kopec (Kadovská hora), reaching 367 m above sea level. This creates a clear distinction when choosing between a landscape experience and local culture: the rocky landscape and the hill shape the connection with nature, while the sacred buildings and artworks are directly connected with the history of the village.
Church, Baroque Art and Older Local History
A central cultural landmark is the Church of Saints Philip and James in Kadov. Its Early Gothic presbytery, or altar area, was rebuilt in the Late Gothic style. The nave and tower date from the end of the 15th century. Since 1822, the church has been dedicated to these two saints; in the same year, it was expanded with the Chapel of Saint Margaret. There is also a Baroque gate with statues in front of the church.
Further details can be found at the cemetery gate: it contains a Pietà dated 1734, as well as statues of Saint Roch, Saint Sebastian and Saint Rosalia. On the village square stands a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dated 1738, regarded as a high-quality example of High Baroque sculpture. On the edge of the village there is a small sacred structure of the Boží muka type. It has survived without a lantern, dates from the late 16th century and serves as a prominent landmark.
The written history also reaches far back. Kadov was first mentioned in a document in 1235. The parish of Kadov was under the patronage of Dubravnik Convent from 1230 to 1400. These two details relate to different historical periods and show how far back the documented history of the village extends.
Festivals and Special Dates
The locally stated traditions include a pilgrimage celebration on the Sunday after the feast of Saints Philip and James, around 3 May. The hody festival is also listed for the Sunday around the feast day of Saint Bartholomew, around 24 August. Bartolomějské hody was scheduled in Kadov for 3:00 p.m. on 22 August 2026; this date has since passed. Also documented as a past date is a Way of the Cross to the Virgin Mary: it was scheduled for Sunday, 22 March 2026, with a meeting point at 3:00 p.m. at the church in Kadov.
