Discover Dolenice: Cultural Monument, Cycling Route and Landscape

Dolenice combines an architecturally valuable cultural monument with a cycling route through a gently rolling agricultural landscape. If you would like to combine cultural discoveries with active days during your trip, you will find two clearly distinct highlights here: the “Pozdvišení sv. Kříže” Chapel on the village square and Cycling Route No. 5009 Břežany–Miroslav–Moravský Krumlov, which passes through Dolenice.

The Chapel on the Village Square

The “Pozdvišení sv. Kříže” Chapel is an immovable cultural monument of Dolenice. It is an architecturally valuable central octagonal building, meaning a centrally arranged structure with an octagonal ground plan. The chapel was built between 1717 and 1725. Its location is clearly described for orientation on site: it stands in the elevated southwestern part of the village square.

The chapel’s exterior design also makes it a distinctive part of the village’s appearance. It has a sheet-metal-covered tent roof. On top of it is a four-sided bell tower with a bulbous cupola, finial and double cross. A single-storey rectangular sacristy is attached to the building. This makes it possible to classify the chapel not only by its age, but also by its unusual construction and the characteristic details of the tower.

The chapel was restored between 2016 and 2020. Among other work, the roof framework was repaired, a new structure for the tower top was created and new roofing was installed. Structural stability was also improved, plaster and infill were renewed, and the altar was restored. The local monuments in Dolenice also include a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk.

Cycling through Miroslavsko

Cycling Route No. 5009 passes through Dolenice and connects Břežany, Miroslav and Moravský Krumlov. The documented nature of the route is particularly interesting when choosing your itinerary: it runs mainly along paved Class II and Class III roads that are suitable for all types of bicycles. This describes the character of the route more precisely than a general reference to cycling.

In terms of scenery, the route passes through the gently rolling agricultural landscape of the Miroslavsko microregion. Fertile fields, orchards and vineyards lie along the route. Towards the end, Cycling Route No. 5009 enters the romantic Rokytná Valley and passes through the Krumlovsko-rokytenské slepence protected area. In this way, the route combines the open cultural landscape with a distinctly different valley and protected-area section.

Traditions and Trails in the Surrounding Area

If you would like to get to know Dolenice not only through individual buildings but also through its local traditions, the traditional Hody, held annually around 12 September, are part of the village’s yearly cycle. You should pay close attention to the approximate date when making your own plans, as it is not given as an exact date.

The area around Dolenice also has cycling and hiking trails suitable for excursions into nature. This allows you to combine the village with different ideas for a day trip: the chapel and the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk represent the local culture, while the cycling route, the surrounding trails, fields, orchards, vineyards and the Rokytná Valley form the scenic focus.
