Bohutice: Culture, Wine and Apricots

Bohutice combines impressive religious culture, the protected U Michálka natural monument, and regional festivals featuring wine and apricots. Cultural Monuments with Their Own Character

The Bohutice Stations of the Cross are particularly distinctive. This cultural monument comprises 54 life-size wooden statues depicting the final journey of Jesus Christ. Visitors interested in sacred art will find life-size representations, a dated statue, and the wine landscape brought together here. In the courtyard of Bohutice Castle, there is also a fountain with a statue of Saint Florian dating from 1720.

Distinctive religious monuments can also be found outside the castle. On the summit of a granite hill stands a statue of Saint Michael erected in 1721, watching over the vineyards. Unlike the fountain in the castle courtyard, this statue stands on a granite hill and is explicitly connected with the wine landscape.

Nature and a Route through Bohutice

U Michálka is a protected natural monument in Bohutice. Both steppe and rocky habitats are part of this protected area.

The Antonín Prášek educational trail leads visitors and pilgrims from Bohutice Castle past the church, the monument to Father Prášek, and the Lourdes grotto to the cemetery. Above the cemetery, the route ends at the statue of Saint Wenceslas. Signposts and information panels accompany the route and identify the trail's stops.

Wine, Apricots and Regional Festivals

The Bohutický košt takes place annually on the last Saturday in April. Up to 500 wine samples are usually offered. The Podzimní bohutické slavnosti provide a different seasonal focus: they combine young wine, traditional slaughterhouse specialties, music, activities for children, and demonstrations of traditional crafts. Young wine is wine that has not yet fully fermented. The three dates are spread throughout the year, each bringing its own regional character.

Another regional theme is the apricot. The annual Bohutice Summer Apricot Carnival includes tastings of apricot jam and apricot brandy. The apricot variety grown in Bohutice was assessed as unique in pomology and had not previously been given a pomological designation. The pomological designation refers to the variety itself, not to the products tasted at the Carnival. The international designation “Abricot Sucre de Bohutice – Bohutická meruňka” was recommended. The fruit is grown locally; an international designation was recommended.
