Podbřežice – Church, Geotope and Local History

Podbřežice brings together sacred art, memorial sites and a geotourism attraction within a compact geographical area. Church of St. Peter and Paul with Historic Objects

The pseudo-Gothic Church of St. Peter and Paul in Podbřežice was consecrated on 14 June 1907. Its more recent construction date is connected with several older historical records. The church contains a bell cast in Olomouc by Zachariáš Milner in 1603. This means that a specific object from the early modern period forms part of the church interior.

The church also contains a tombstone of the painter Ondřej dating from 1599, which can be seen today. The stone was moved from the original church to the cemetery and is now located in the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Podbřežice. For visitors, this creates a small but vivid sequence of traces through time: the consecration of the present church, the older bell and the even earlier tombstone point to different periods of local history.

Crosses and Monuments in the Village

Further memorial sites can also be found outside the church in Podbřežice. The cast-iron cross of Podbřežice was made in 1834 at the ironworks in Blansko. It stands at the former crossroads of the road to Komořany. In 2012, the cross was restored under the supervision of the Brno branch of the National Heritage Institute. Its origin, former location and restoration give the object a clearly documented history, so you do not have to view it merely as a general roadside marker.

The parish acquired the cast-iron statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in 1885. Today, the statue stands in front of the church. Also located in front of the church is the war memorial “Monument to the Victims of the First and Second World Wars” in the park on the village square of Podbřežice. Thus, different forms of remembrance are located close together in one public area of the village: a statue of a saint, a war memorial and the church as a historical point of reference.

Geotope and Cycle Path Section South of and Between the Villages

As a complement to the cultural history, consider visiting the “Mechovkový útes” geotope. It lies 1.5 km south of Podbřežice, forms part of the small protected area “Stepní stráně u Komořan” and is designated as a geotourism attraction and excursion site. The specific distance can help you weigh up whether to choose a culturally focused stay in the village or an excursion to a protected landscape area when selecting accommodation.

The cycle path section between Komořany and Podbřežice is designated as a 900 m-long section from 2024.
