Bohaté Málkovice combines a distinctive village history with cultural and historical landmarks and a special connection to its natural surroundings. The wayside shrine, crosses, and bell tower tell the story of the village; Větrník Hill and the Větrníky Protected Area offer different perspectives on the landscape. When planning your trip, these give you specific themes to consider as you choose where to stay.

Village history shaped by agriculture and a change of name

Bohaté Málkovice has been documented in records since 1307. A later turning point in the village’s history came in 1920, when the settlement was officially renamed from Německé to Bohaté. As early as 1391, the entire village belonged to the Augustinian monastery. These events, separated by centuries, give an impression of how long the village has appeared in historical records and how its name changed.

Agriculture is also part of Bohaté Málkovice’s traditional character. The village has always been purely agricultural; the soil was considered highly fertile, and prosperous farmers shaped the settlement’s character. The three known historical village seals document this agricultural character. The village’s history can therefore be traced not only through dates and name changes, but also through an important aspect of its former community life.

Wayside shrine, bell tower, and crosses

Zvonice na návsi, a local cultural and historical landmark, stands in the village square. A plastered masonry wayside shrine west of Bohaté Málkovice is distinguished by its square ground plan. Its smooth, four-sided base leads into a shaft that tapers slightly toward the middle. A narrow cornice separates it from the lantern: each side has rectangular niches containing depictions of saints. A gabled roof covered with fired clay tiles and topped with a small Latin cross completes the structure.

Other named landmarks include Svatý kříž, near the municipal office, which was restored in 2008. Stoletý kříž stands on the boundary between Bohaté Málkovice and the municipality of Kojátky. Together with the bell tower and the wayside shrine, these landmarks offer different points of connection with local cultural history. Their specific architectural forms and the names of the crosses give this history a tangible character, without requiring a long sequence of events.

Větrník and Větrníky: two natural features

The similar-sounding names refer to different things: Větrník is a hill, while Větrníky is a protected area. Větrník rises west of Bohaté Málkovice. A historical description of the area mentions views from there south toward the Pálava Hills, north toward Kopeček near Olomouc, and east toward Hostýn. Whether these distant views are visible depends on the weather and visibility conditions.

Větrníky, by contrast, is the name of a protected natural area around Bohaté Málkovice. Its protected habitats include sub-Pannonian steppe grasslands, semi-natural dry grasslands, and scrub communities on calcareous soil. The area also has species-rich xerothermic vegetation with rare and endangered Pontic-Pannonian species. Protection also covers habitats of rare and endangered animal species, as well as dry grasslands and xerophilous scrub habitats. If you are planning to visit the protected area, check the local access conditions.

Bařisko is also nearby. The area includes a pond, a pool, and a wetland. These three natural features are clearly distinct from one another and add to the picture of the landscape around the village. They can help guide you if you are interested in nature.

Tailor your stay to your interests

When choosing a trip to Bohaté Málkovice, you can start by deciding what interests you most: the documented village history and its landmarks, or the natural surroundings of Větrník, Větrníky, and Bařisko. Each offers a different focus, without requiring you to treat the village’s history and landscape as the same kind of experience.
