Kyjovice – Archaeology, Nature and Cycling

Kyjovice is a destination for travellers who want to combine archaeological discoveries, protected landscapes and cycling. The Sutny site in the cadastral area of Kyjovice is particularly characteristic: it lies on a gentle rise north of a reservoir. This gives visitors various ways to explore the history and landscape of the region.

Archaeological traces from the Stone Age to the Iron Age

The multi-period Sutny site was continuously inhabited from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. Systematic archaeological research has been carried out there since 1964. Sutny is also a significant archaeological site in UAN I category. The long period of settlement thus brings together several prehistoric eras at a single site.

The most vivid example is the Sutny rondel from the culture of Moravian Painted Ware. Its layout consists of a ditch and several palisade ditches inside and outside the ditch. The Těšetice-Kyjovice rondel was the first comprehensively researched example of its kind in Central Europe. Together with the Těšetice “Vinohrady” area, the investigated Těšetice-Kyjovice “Sutny” areas form the largest known Hallstatt-period settlement complex. This extends the perspective from an individual structure to a larger settlement context of the Hallstatt period.

Another historical landmark is the first written mention of Kyjovice in 1275. The Těšetice-Kyjovice archaeological site is also located on the edge of the Tvořihrážský Forest. The year 1275 refers to the documented history of the village, while the sites reach much further back into prehistory. In this way, the history of the village is connected with specific landscapes rather than being limited to a single historic monument.

Aquatic and Forest Habitats

The natural side of the area includes the Jevišovka Natura 2000 protected site of European importance, with the code CZ0623041. It protects aquatic habitats with aquatic plant vegetation and populations of spined loach. The protected features also include species-rich communities of aquatic macrophytes and a population of the spined loach hybrid complex.

The Zmijiště protected area represents a different landscape theme. It protects Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests and perialpidic basiphilous thermophilous oak forests. Jevišovka and Zmijiště thus represent different habitat types: aquatic habitats define the conservation focus in one, while various protected forest communities do so in the other. This creates a destination where archaeological themes and different forms of nature conservation provide complementary points of orientation for your visit.
