Hostim – Historic Buildings and Cycling Routes in the Jevišovická Uplands

Hostim is situated in the gently rolling landscape of the Jevišovická Uplands. Landscape, Historic Paths and Cycling

A distinctive geographical connection is the proximity to the historic Haberská Trail, which was later also known as the Imperial Road. Two cycling routes pass through Hostim: the Jevišovicko in the Footsteps of Raduit de Souches cycling route runs through Hostim. The Jevišovický Circuit I is designed as a circular cycling route and passes through Jevišovice, Olbramkostel and Hostim.

Chateau, Ruin and Historic Townscapes

The chateau in Hostim is a detached, four-winged masonry building. The wings are arranged around a trapezoidal courtyard. Access is via a brick bridge spanning the moat that surrounds the building and the adjacent farm buildings. This entrance alone makes the complex comprehensible as an independent historic ensemble.

The history of the town also includes the Bukovina Castle ruins. They stand above the Nedveka stream on the site of a stone castle that was the seat of the Lords of Bukovina in the first half of the 14th century. The castle complex has a bergfried layout and a residential tower; it survives in fragmentary form from the period between the 14th century and the first half of the 15th century.

A church in Hostim is documented as early as 1394. The cemetery contains the Chapel of St. Cross, built in 1809 by Countess Eleonora de Meraviglia, the owner of the local estate; she is also buried there. The chapel is considered a valuable example of late Baroque funerary architecture with Classicist details and defines the character of the historic cemetery grounds.

Architecture Between the Village Square and Farm Buildings

Among the prominent buildings is the Baroque granary from the 18th century. It is one of the few surviving multi-storey granaries and an important architectural landmark on the hill above the village. The village square also features a statue of St. John of Nepomuk, a high-quality small-scale High Baroque religious sculpture with a pedestal.

The vicarage is a monumental, two-storey Classicist building of art-historical value. A group of five wayside shrines in the surroundings of Hostim complements the religious architecture with examples of small-scale vernacular religious architecture. Together, these buildings show how differently the history of the town can be read in public space.

The former utilitarian architecture is also part of the town’s character. The former brewery complex in Hostim is a fully preserved example of rural utilitarian architecture in South Moravia. The former Radkovský water mill still partly retains its millrace and is one of the few surviving mills built along watercourses in open countryside. Both complexes should be regarded as historical testimonies; their former function is the primary focus.
