Cycling paths, nature trails and nature around Šanov

Šanov combines distinctive cycling paths, protected landscape and historical traces to create a variety of travel experiences. This is particularly evident on the Muchova cycling path: it is a 20 km circular route leading to historically, architecturally and ecologically interesting places in the cadastral area of Šanov and the surrounding area, and is connected to important regional cycling paths and routes. At 20 km, it is considerably longer than the two shorter circular routes and combines several different themes along a single route. The route is therefore aimed at anyone who would like to combine a longer cycling tour with changing cultural and landscape themes.

Shorter excursions also lead to a variety of destinations. The large Údolím lásky educational trail circuit is 5.4 km long and leads to the edge of the Karlov nature reserve. The Karlovský poznávací okruh measures 4.3 km and leads to the dam of the Horní Karlov pond. From there, it is possible to observe the landscape of the Příční potok valley and the water surfaces of both ponds. At the opposite end of the dam there is also a hide that can be used to observe the local animals undisturbed. For a shorter nature excursion, you can therefore choose between the edge of the protected area and the waterscape at the dam.

Protected Landscape and Historical Traces

The Karlov nature reserve preserves the remains of natural oak forests and a hornbeam-maple forest. This forest is surrounded by extensive stands of black locust.

A cultural highlight is Emin zámek, which was originally called Emin dvůr. The château was built in 1882 by Eduard Khuen-Belassy for his wife, Emanuela Khuen-Belassy. The young painter Alfons Mucha was involved in decorating some of the interiors. The artistic contribution concerns some of the interiors, while the year of construction marks the creation of the château as a whole. Alongside cycling and nature experiences, there is therefore also a clearly dated history associated with a well-known name from art history.

For planning your visit, it is important to know that Emin zámek currently houses a social care facility and is therefore not open to the public. The historical significance of the building cannot therefore be equated with a regular visit to a publicly accessible château. Anyone choosing Šanov as a place to stay should take into account this difference between the visible history of the place and what can actually be visited.

Sport and Local Tradition

Sportcentrum Šanov has an indoor sports hall for futsal, basketball, floorball, tennis, volleyball, Nohejbal and aerobics. The documented facilities thus cover several sports under one roof and complement activities on cycling paths and circular routes with a separate, clearly defined opportunity for exercise. The indoor hall complements the paths and natural destinations with a weather-independent sporting option.

The local annual calendar has regularly included the small spring festival Otvírání studánky since 2009. The programme also includes a cycling tour to the Karlov nature reserve.
