Discover Jevišovice: Castles, Dam and Cycle Route

Jevišovice combines a distinctive river landscape with evidence from several centuries and a clearly defined cycle route. Starý zámek stands on a rock in a bend of the Jevišovka River. Its location gives the historic building a special setting within the landscape, while the Jevišovice Dam adds its own distinctive feature as a technical monument. The “Krajem dvou řek” circular route, which begins and ends in Jevišovice, is another highlight. This allows you to combine culture, waterscapes and active exploration with different focuses.

Historical Traces in Jevišovice

Starý zámek was built in the first third of the 15th century by the Jevišovice line of the Kunštát family. A Gothic core has been preserved within the building; Renaissance and early Baroque alterations complement its development. For a tour through the town’s history, the coexistence of different building phases is particularly interesting. The parish church of St Joseph dates from 1830. It contains an organ from 1748, bringing together the church building and an older furnishing element from two different periods.

Further traces are spread across various locations. Pustý hrad in Jevišovice was founded by the Lords of Kunštát sometime before 1289. A monument with the typical Hussite chalice symbol stands on Žalov Hill. Sýpka Jevišovice dates from around 1750 and has been converted into a cultural and sports centre as a listed building. Thus, a medieval foundation, religiously shaped remembrance and a historic granary building with cultural and sporting functions come together.

Dam and Cycle Route

The Jevišovice Dam was built between 1894 and 1897 and is currently used mainly for fishing. It therefore offers a different excursion focus from the cycle route: at the dam, the technical monument and the explicitly stated purpose of fishing are at the centre, while the cycle route enables a longer journey through the landscape.

For cyclists, the 53.3-kilometre “Krajem dvou řek” cycle route offers a circular tour that begins and ends in Jevišovice. The route runs mostly through Jevišovka Nature Park. Its length, circular layout and connection with the landscape help you classify the tour as a longer cycling trip and compare its scale with other plans. Because the start and finish are in the same place, the starting point remains clear for planning; at the same time, the nature park shapes most of the route.

Park, Wine and Discoveries

There are also green transitions between the active and historical themes. The park at Nový zámek includes historic trees, clearings interspersed with meadows and an extensive network of paths. A recurring public wine tasting is the “Zámecká vinařská romance”. The visitor information centre is located at the roundabout in the centre of Jevišovice and provides a clear point of orientation for local research.

The “Labyrintem Jevišovické historie” children’s labyrinth is also located in Předzámčí. This dedicated attraction complements the historic sites and landscape themes with a focus for younger visitors. The range of experiences in Jevišovice therefore extends from castle and church history through park paths and wine to the dam, cycle route and children’s activities.
