Strachotice between the Dyje, a monument and wine-growing tradition

Strachotice developed at an important ford across the Dyje and was granted township status in 1342; this elevation gave the town privileges. The ford belongs to the early development of the settlement, while its elevation to a township marks a later, clearly dated step in the town’s history. In Strachotice, churches, a chapel, a water mill and the mill race meet along the Dyje. The area’s character also includes a long wine-growing tradition. The town thus combines historic buildings and waterworks with an independent cultural connection to wine-growing.

Churches and local history

The Church of St. George in Strachotice was built in 1744. The monument-protected complex includes a mortuary, the associated grounds, an enclosing wall and a gate. The protection therefore applies not only to the church building, but to an ensemble with several structural components. After a fire in 1776, the church was soon restored. Its history therefore encompasses both its construction in the 18th century and its restoration after the fire. The dates 1744 and 1776 provide two clearly distinct milestones in the town’s history.

The village district of Micmanice also broadens the cultural picture of Strachotice. The Baroque Chapel of the Holy Angels stands there, with church services held inside. Micmanice is also home to the water mill, first mentioned in 1302. A small hydroelectric power station is currently located in the mill. The chapel and mill thus represent different forms of architectural and religious history within the same district: the chapel is a Baroque religious building where services are held, while the mill is connected with an early mention and current hydropower use.

The Dyje and the mill race

The mill race along the Dyje is an important technical monument and probably originated in the 13th century. In the 16th century, it was extended through Slup as far as Jaroslavice. Its history therefore includes both its probable period of origin and a later documented extension. The mill race complements the local history of the ford with another example of water engineering. While the ford marks Strachotice’s early origins on the Dyje, the race points to the technical shaping of the watercourse.

Cycling and regional discoveries

Strachotice is crossed by two cycling routes. The signposted Česko-rakouská příhraniční trasa cycle route passes through the town, as does the Prague–Vienna long-distance cycle route. Thus, Strachotice is traversed both by a signposted route with its own name and by a connection explicitly designated as a long-distance cycle route. Both routes are documented ways to include the town in a cycling trip, although they do not have the same route name or the same type of route.

The long wine-growing tradition is one of Strachotice’s distinctive characteristics. Alongside the religious buildings, the water mill and the technical monument of the mill race, it forms another part of the town. The range of local themes therefore extends from the ford across the Dyje and historic waterworks to the church, chapel, cycling routes and wine-growing.
