Holubice – History and Village Traditions

Holubice combines a distinctive landscape with traces of European history and vibrant village traditions. The village lies within the protected memorial zone of the Austerlitz battlefield. At the same time, it is situated on the right bank of the Rakovec stream, on the border between the Dyje–Svratka Valley and the Upper Moravian Valley. The intensively farmed, hilly and varied surroundings give Holubice a distinct rural character and create a fitting setting for a trip in which historical discoveries and regional culture belong together.

Experience history directly in Holubice

The educational trail devoted to the Battle of Slavkov runs through Holubice. The public “Bitva tří císařů” educational trail also offers a detailed introduction to the history. Its 29 information panels explain the European political and global military significance of the battle. They show the battle situation, introduce the commanders, illustrate the most important combat operations in schematic diagrams and provide information about the situation on 2 December 1805.

Heavy fighting took place in the northern part of the Austerlitz battlefield near the municipalities of Holubice and Kruh. This means that the historical dimension is not limited to dates, but is connected with a specifically identified site. Church, chapel and archaeological traces

A visible focal point of the village’s history is the Church of Saint Wenceslas. It was completed and ceremonially opened to the public on 14 July 1929. It was built with funds collected from local residents; support came from local patrons Cyril Frank, František Brtník, František Frank and Alois Frank. The Chapel of Saint Gotthard dates from the 18th century and stands in a small park on the village square in Holubice.

Archaeology also broadens the picture of the village. In connection with the construction of the D1 motorway, rescue excavations uncovered a Stone Age grave and a Lombard cemetery. The finds included jewellery, ceramic vessels, weapons and various tools. These discoveries reach far beyond the history of the battlefield in chronological terms and make it clear that Holubice brings together several historical layers within a small area.

Festivals with costumes, music and regional traditions

The local calendar of events is shaped by several traditional festivals. Babské hody takes place every year in May. It includes traditional costumes, a procession through the village accompanied by a brass band and an evening dance at the cultural centre. Svatováclavské hody is regularly celebrated at the end of September in connection with the feast of Saint Wenceslas.

Martinské hody follows in November. Traditional headwear, woollen scarves and slivovitz are just as much a part of it as an evening dance accompanied by a cimbalom band. At the end of the year, the Church of Saint Wenceslas also hosts a long-standing Christmas concert tradition. The 10th edition of “Holubácká sedmička” was a seven-event competition involving ball games for teams of two.
