Chvalkovice: Church, Windmill and Hradisko

Baroque Sacred Art in the Church of Saint Bartholomew

The Church of Saint Bartholomew in Chvalkovice is first documented in 1389. It acquired its current appearance through Baroque alterations around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. The early mention therefore clearly predates the Baroque construction phase. The monumental Baroque altar was created shortly after 1760 and thus followed the alterations chronologically. Its structure includes the mensa as the altar table, a tabernacle with an altarpiece, elaborate sculptures and stucco decorations. The mensa denotes the altar table of the structure, while the tabernacle with the altarpiece forms part of its furnishings. From 2000 to 2012, the church was completely renovated.

Windmill and Plague Column in the Village

A plague column on the village square in Chvalkovice commemorates the plague epidemic of 1715. The windmill stands about 500 metres east of the municipality of Chvalkovice. It is a brick-built mill of the Dutch type and began grinding grain in 1873. Its first miller and builder was Josef Vítek. The history of the mill can thus be linked to a specific start of operations and to a named person who built the structure and subsequently used it as a miller. The plague column belongs to the village centre, while the windmill stands in the eastern surroundings of the municipality.

Hradisko (Boří): Forested Summit and Archaeological Area

Hradisko (Boří) lies north of Chvalkovice and is a forested summit at an elevation of 518 metres. The summit is located in the cadastral areas of Chvalkovice and Nemochovice. The Hradisko (Boří) area also has archaeological associations with the Aurignacian and the Bell Beaker culture. Both designations refer to different prehistoric cultural periods. Hradisko therefore encompasses not only the specific high point but also an archaeological area whose associations extend beyond the landscape form itself.

Hradisko can be reached from Chvalkovice via a 1.5-kilometre-long red-marked hiking trail. The trail leads to the forested summit. At the edge of the forest, there is a tourist shelter with seating. The shelter is therefore located along the route to the high point and complements the trail with a designated resting place at the transition between the forest and the open edge area.
