Otnice: Church, Views and Local History

Otnice reveals its character in several clearly distinct places: the Parish Church of St. Aloysius and St. Gall shapes the townscape, Strážka opens up views across Otnice and the surrounding area, and an adjacent park is located by the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. This picture is complemented by the Chapel of the Virgin Mary and by traditional costumes seen at festive events. Otnice thus brings together architectural history, views, religious sites, and regional tradition.

A Townscape with Historical Depth

The Parish Church of St. Aloysius and St. Gall shapes the townscape of Otnice. The present building was constructed in 1855 and 1856. At the same time, the history of the church at this location reaches further back: the first written mention of the church at this site dates from 1378. In Otnice, a church building from the mid-19th century therefore stands alongside a history of the same site reaching back to the Middle Ages. The church thus connects the present-day townscape with the site's older historical significance.

The local history of Otnice reaches back to 1255. Hypolit and Jindřich of Otnice were among the local nobles of this early period. Together with the church's history dating from 1378, this creates a historical arc extending to today's church building from 1855 and 1856. Otnice thus combines the history of the town, the older history of the church site, and a 19th-century building that remains visible to this day.

Views from Strážka

Another perspective opens up on the ascent to Strážka. There, the path leads to a bench with views of Otnice and the surrounding area. The view from this elevated point distinguishes Strážka from the historical sites in the town. The viewpoint therefore complements the religious and architectural attractions with a view of Otnice and the surrounding landscape.

Otnice is also home to a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk with an adjacent park. The statue and the park form a single stop. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary adds a separate point of interest to the religious sites. The townscape therefore includes both a monument with a park and a standalone chapel.

Tradition and a Festive Event

The traditional costumes of Otnice can currently be seen at festive events. They complement the locally rooted buildings and the views with a tradition that becomes visible during celebrations. Alongside the architectural history and religious sites, Otnice therefore also has a cultural form that is showcased today.

The event Aloiské hody took place in Otnice from June 20 to 21, 2026. The festival has therefore already taken place.
