Strážnice – Culture, Wine and Excursions along the Baťa Canal

Strážnice combines an engaging history, winegrowing and water-based experiences with a landscape in which the Morava has preserved its natural forms. The Strážnice Open-Air Museum is particularly diverse: more than 60 interesting structures stand across an area of 16 hectares. The vernacular architecture there dates back to the 18th century, making historical building forms immediately tangible.

Folk Culture and Winegrowing at the Open-Air Museum

The open-air museum showcases not only buildings, but also the working life associated with them. The areas presented include winegrowing buildings and their equipment. A vineyard illustrates the development of winegrowing from the earliest times to the present day. Events and programmes also feature various craft techniques: pottery, weaving on a loom, the traditional handmade production of gloves, basket weaving and the production of krpce. This allows a visit to be supplemented with practical insights into materials, tools and traditional skills.

A regular fixture in the events calendar is the “Mezinárodní folklorní festival Strážnice” festival. It takes place every year on the last weekend of June. Those who plan their stay for this period experience Strážnice in the spirit of international folklore. At other times of year, the open-air museum, with its buildings, exhibitions and programmes, remains an independent cultural highlight.

Jewish History and Local History

The Strážnice Synagogue houses the permanent exhibition “Žíli mezi námi” on the history of Strážnice’s Jewish population. Visitors can also see the interior of the synagogue, exhibitions on Jewish themes and the Jewish cemetery. The Strážnice Town Museum broadens this historical perspective with permanent exhibitions on local history, nature, associations, postcards, furniture, ceramics and blue-dye printing. Alongside regional history, the focus is therefore also on everyday objects, design and local association life.

The Morava, Views and Waterways

Three kilometres northwest of the town lies the Osypané břehy nature monument protection area. There, an unregulated section of the Morava comprises three pronounced meanders and adjacent forests. This makes it possible to experience the landscape not merely as a riverbank, but as an interplay of watercourse, curves and forest.

The Strážní bílá věž offers another perspective on Strážnice. From a height of almost 20 metres, the exceptional view extends across the town of Strážnice, Pomoraví and the surrounding landscape. At the Strážnice harbour on the Baťa Canal, small boats and cabin boats can be rented. The harbour also offers regular boat trips to the harbour in Petrov. This provides options for spending the day that include both views across the countryside and an experience on the water.

The wine tradition can also be found beyond the open-air museum. Hotařská búda houses a small exhibition on winegrowing. In the historic cellar rooms of Zámecké sklepy, wine tastings take place among the barrels. Together with the winegrowing buildings and vineyard at the open-air museum, this provides several different ways to explore the subject of winegrowing.
