Dolní Dubňany

Dolní Dubňany combines landscapes, marked trails and vibrant Moravian customs. The village lies roughly halfway between Brno and Znojmo and belongs to the South Moravian Region. If you would like to combine nature observation, cycling routes and local culture, you will find several clearly distinct points of interest here for your trip.

Landscape, Natural Monuments and Marked Trails

The municipality of Dolní Dubňany lies in the Znojmo Uplands between the catchment areas of the Rokytná and Jihlava rivers. Marked cycling route No. 401 passes through the village on the Moravský Krumlov–Horní Dubňany route towards Třebíč. The marked Mlynářská stezka trail between Nové Město na Moravě and Hardegg also passes through Dolní Dubňany.

The two natural monuments are particularly distinctive. Široký covers 0.6515 hectares and protects narrow-leaved dry grasslands with the large-flowered pasque flower (Pulsatilla grandis), the Bohemian star-of-Bethlehem (Gagea bohemica), as well as other rare, some specially protected, plant and animal species. Ve Žlebě covers 2.4831 hectares and overlaps with the Natura 2000 site of Community importance CZ0622161.

In the vicinity of Dolní Dubňany, walks through the spring landscape can lead to slopes with rare pasque flowers. These striking plants grow particularly close to the Dolnodubňanská Reservoir, “Balaton”. Those travelling in spring will experience a landscape whose appeal lies not only in its openness, but also in its individual protected habitats.

Church, Archaeology and Moravian Tradition

The Church of St. Wenceslas in Dolní Dubňany dates from the mid-13th century. The area around the church is registered as a Category ÚAN I archaeological area. Finds and settlement traces from the Linear Pottery culture, the Bell Beaker culture, the Únětice culture, and from the Middle Ages through the modern era are recorded there. A tour of the village therefore gains a historical depth that extends far beyond a single building.

Another characteristic way into the village’s history is through folk costume. The folk costume from Dolní Dubňany is considered a fundamental example of the costumes from the Moravskokrumlovsko area and is classified as the West Moravian type. Following the traditional Václavské hody in 2023, the local Chasa initiated the restoration of the Dolní Dubňany folk costume, which had not been renewed for 170 years. At the Václavské hody in Dolní Dubňany in 2024, the first two pairs wearing the renewed Dolní Dubňany folk costume were presented.

Customs and music also continue to be part of the village’s public character. During a spring custom, a girl carried the “Smrtolka”, wrapped in a featherbed, while the other girls followed her, sang and moved the decorated figure to the rhythm. As part of this custom, the girls had the “Smrtolka” buried in the featherbed in every house to welcome spring. Local folk songs are still sung in Dolní Dubňany today, and the so-called Kloboukový obřad is also still maintained.
