Vítonice – Chapels, Flatlands and Wine Tradition

Vítonice combines a documented history reaching back to 1341 with a striking concentration of small religious structures, a flat landscape and living traces of its wine tradition. Those who wish to experience the village not merely as an overnight destination but as a starting point for cultural discoveries will find various themes within a compact geographical area: chapels along roads, on the village square and in the village centre, the Křepický potok stream flowing through Vítonice, and the 12-hectare municipal woodland of Akáty.

Discover Chapels and Local History

A niche chapel on the elevation above Vítonice along the road to Hostěradice is registered as a cultural monument under number 48937/7-8337. Its location makes it a distinctive part of the village landscape, without implying that it is currently open to visitors.

Another chapel stands on the village square. It was built in 1937 and dedicated to the Holy Cross. The niche chapel of the Holy Trinity outside Vítonice in the direction of Želetice provides a different historical accent. It was built around 1831 and extensively restored in 2007–2008. This structure therefore reveals both its earlier date of construction and its subsequent history of preservation.

In the centre of Vítonice, by the bridge near the road from Znojmo to Moravský Krumlov, stands the niche chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk. It was erected in 1830, rebuilt at its original location in 2013 and consecrated again. Together with the village’s first written mention, dating from 1341, this creates a multifaceted picture of the local past, revealed through specific structures and historical dates.

Flat Landscape, Stream and Municipal Woodland

Vítonice lies in the Dyjskosvratecký úval lowland. The surrounding area is predominantly flat, particularly around Jevišovka. This landscape form is just as important for understanding the village as its cultural monuments.

The Křepický potok stream flows through Vítonice. The Akáty municipal woodland covers 12 hectares and consists predominantly of acacia trees. Other vegetation growing along the stream includes black elder, conifers, fruit trees, willows and poplars. Those who wish to combine cultural sites with impressions of the landscape during their stay will find various facets within the village surroundings.

Pilgrimage, Remembrance and Wine

The pilgrimage in Vítonice takes place on the first Sunday in August. It complements the permanently visible chapels with an annual religious occasion. To commemorate the flood of 5 August 1845, during which several houses collapsed in Vítonice, a procession of devout residents of Vítonice travelled each year on this day of remembrance to the church in Prosiměřice. The tradition thus connects a specific historical event with a religious route between the villages.

Winegrowing is also part of the local history. The wine-cellar area lies approximately 1 km outside Vítonice in the direction of Hostěradice. Pinot blanc, known as Rulandské bílé, was selected for the vineyard in Vítonice—a grape variety that was historically cultivated in the region. In 2021, the Vítonice winegrowers also decided to restore the historic Nad sklepy vineyard. Cycling through Flat and Hilly Terrain

As a regional reference for active excursions, the main branch, Route I, of the Znojemská vinařská cycling route is documented. It leads from Hrušovansko to Znojmo, mainly through flat and hilly terrain, and runs along Class II and Class III roads as well as field paths. Thus, alongside local history, there is also a cycling theme in which different types of terrain and routes can be distinguished.
