Chvalatice: Trails, Water and Culture

Chvalatice lies on a hill above the Dyje. Below, the river flows through a deeply incised, wooded valley; forests and hills surround the village. Landscape between the Dyje and Vranov Reservoir

The Růžový vrch Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Chvalatice, about 1 km south of the municipality. It is situated on rocky slopes above Vranov Reservoir. The rocky slopes of the protected area give the section above the reservoir a different landscape character from the deeply incised, wooded Dyje valley. Water, rocks, forest and hills shape the surroundings.

There are also distinctive natural features at Petrovy skály. Fissure vegetation on silicate rocks and scree slopes, as well as mobile silicate scree, occurs there. Fissure vegetation refers to plants that grow in rock fissures. In addition to the silicate rocks, the plants in the rock fissures and the mobile scree are therefore also specific natural features of Petrovy skály.

Marked Trails and Swimming in the Reservoir

Numerous marked hiking and cycling trails run through the cadastral area of Chvalatice. Hiking and cycling here are therefore connected with a specific, marked trail network.

A second, distinctly different option is offered by Chvalatická zátoka, where swimming in Vranov Reservoir is possible. In addition to the trail network, this also provides an activity directly by the water. Chvalatice is also a stop on IDS-JMK bus route 830.

Church, Hunting Lodge and Hillfort Site

A monument to the victims of the First World War stands by the church. The Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross itself is a single-nave late Baroque building and is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The single-nave building has one church space without side aisles. The church site thus combines remembrance of the victims of the First World War with a late Baroque ecclesiastical building. The protection status does not state that the site can currently be visited.

Another trace of the village's history is the ruin of the hunting lodge in Chvalatice. The small circular building originally served the Lords of Bítov in the 19th century as a hunting lodge and resting place during hunts in the surrounding forests.

South of Chvalatice lies the Chvalatické hradiště, a preserved, freely accessible prehistoric and Slavic hillfort site. It is located on a narrow rocky promontory surrounded by the Dyje on three sides. The Dyje flowing around it on three sides defines the spatial setting of the hillfort site. The preserved site on the narrow rocky promontory thus lies between land and river.
