Blížkovice: Church, Crafts and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Blížkovice
Blížkovice combines a local history documented since 1349 with two specific travel interests: the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew and a regional cycling route. The Romanesque core of the church dates from the early 13th century. The 84-kilometre Živé pomezí Krumlovsko–Jevišovicko cycling route also passes through the town. Visitors planning a stay can therefore consider local history and cycling as separate points of interest.
The Parish Church: Building History and Furnishings
The Romanesque core of the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew dates back to the early 13th century. A Gothic chancel with a sacristy and ossuary was probably added in the first quarter of the 14th century. The probable dating of the addition remains part of the building’s history: the oldest core mentioned and the rooms added later represent different construction phases.
The furnishings also include a specific detail: the church has a late Renaissance stone baptismal font. Its lid bears a wooden carving of the Baptism of Christ from the late 18th century. The stone font and carved wooden lid thus come from different periods. For those interested in culture, the church brings together an early building history and a vivid example of later religious art.
Guilds, the Market Square and Local History
The carpenters’ and woodcarvers’ guilds of Blížkovice were known for their artistic craftsmanship. Their works adorn the church in Blížkovice, Bítov Castle and other notable buildings in the region. Another stop in the town’s history is the Panská hospoda on the market square, which was the meeting place of eight guilds. Together, the church, crafts and guild meeting place offer insight into different aspects of local history.
Brewing and agriculture are also among the town’s documented themes. Blížkovice once had a brewery; hops were apparently also grown in the field behind the church, known as Chmelenec. The relatively extensive pond-farming tradition adds another aspect to the history of the local economy and landscape.
Cycling the Živé pomezí Krumlovsko–Jevišovicko Route
The 84-kilometre Živé pomezí Krumlovsko–Jevišovicko cycling route passes through Blížkovice. In the wider travel area, it connects the Greenways Praha–Wien (No. 48) and Krakow–Morava–Wien (No. 4) along the western edge of the South Moravian Region. The route as a whole largely avoids busy roads and crosses hilly terrain; some sections offer views across the open countryside. These characteristics apply to the route overall and do not necessarily describe every section through the town.
When planning a trip, there are therefore two distinct interests to choose from: the building history and guild crafts offer a cultural and historical focus, while the cycling route places Blížkovice within a longer regional itinerary. If you are planning a cycling trip, check current route conditions before setting off.
