Kaplitz: History, Hiking Trails and Water
Kaplitz combines a historic center with marked trails, a river canyon landscape and waterside excursion destinations. If you are traveling with children, you can plan a stay that combines local history, small discovery activities and a day at the swimming area; those seeking nature can compare two trails with different characteristics.
Historic Center with Special Details
The historic center was declared an urban conservation area in 1990. A Renaissance town hall stands on its central square; House No. 215 features figurative sgraffito. The stone fountain complex also tells a story: it was built in 1646, and renovations from 1717, 1775, 1901, 1934 and 1996 are recorded on its central stone column.
Churches and Brewing History
The Church of St. Peter and Paul is a Gothic two-nave church with a tower on the northern side of its west façade. The tower and nave date from the 13th century, and the church is also a significant example of South Bohemian Late Gothic architecture. The Late Gothic Church of St. Florian stands immediately next to it. During the Napoleonic Wars, it served as a storage facility for military supplies and was severely damaged. The former hospital near the Chapel of St. Barbara and St. Joseph is a Baroque architectural monument with unusually thick walls and served the poorest patients and travelers.
Traces of brewing also form part of the town's history. The Bělidlo Brewery was built in 1648 outside the town of Kaplice on the Malše River. The Buquoy Brewery was destroyed by fire in 1718 and rebuilt on a larger scale in 1732.
Hiking between an Educational Trail and a River Canyon
In the foothills of the Novohrad Mountains, there is an educational trail with simple observation activities for children, information boards and supplementary QR codes. The blue-marked Z Kaplice na Pořešín route begins in Kaplice town park and leads through a wild river canyon landscape. Rocky sections of the riverbank are secured with chains. The marked Přechod Slepičích hor route can be started at the Kaplice Information Center; it is 18 kilometers long, takes about six hours, is considered moderately challenging and runs along paved forest, field and asphalt roads. This allows you to compare the starting point, trail length, walking time and surface in advance with your preferred daily rhythm and personal stamina.
Water Experiences for Different Days
Nádrž Květoňov reservoir near Kaplice is a seven-hectare body of still water for fly-fishing. Fly-fishing, pike spinning and fishing from a boat are permitted. For a different family day, Koupaliště Kaplice outdoor swimming pool offers a pool for small children, a larger school swimming pool with a slide and a large 200-meter-long pool for adults.
The Krampus Gallery
The Krampus Gallery is located in reconstructed cellars of a former Rožmberk brewery. It displays masks carved from wood or leather, original Krampus clothing and equipment, photographs of Krampus shows in Kaplice and a film compilation of past Krampus processions.
