Pořešín: Castle history on a wooded rocky spur

Pořešín combines a striking castle ruin with medieval history, a museum and several documented trails through South Bohemia. The castle stands on a narrow, wooded rocky spur above the left bank of the Malše. As a result, not only the ruin but also its location shapes the character of the place. A castle with history and tangible artefacts

Pořešín Castle was founded at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries by members of the Bavorů ze Strakonic family as an administrative centre for their more distant possessions. A model dating from around 1390 belongs to Pořešín Castle.

The Pořešín Castle Museum provides insights into medieval clothing and weapons. Also on display are authentic objects found at the castle: coins, a bone bead, part of a suit of armour, a knife, spurs, a barrel and the oldest surviving wooden beam. These varied objects in particular give the history of the castle tangible detail.

Outer Bailey, Events and Concert Stage

The outer bailey of Pořešín has been open to the public since 2021. It contains facilities for various activities relating to life in the Middle Ages. Events such as battle re-enactments and medieval craft markets take place in the outer bailey area throughout the year. The castle grounds also include a concert stage, so alongside historical interpretation, events of various kinds have their place here.

Routes to and through Pořešín

The Zemská stezka leads to Pořešín Castle and connects South Bohemia with the Danube region. As a historic country road between Bohemia and Upper Austria, it is 215 km long. The route from Kaplice to Pořešín begins in Kaplice town park and runs along the left bank of the Malše. This means that the approach to Pořešín can also be viewed through the river landscape and its connection with Kaplice. The length of the Zemská stezka makes it a supra-regional connection, while the route from Kaplice provides a specific starting point for orientation.

For another route perspective, the Hrady na Malši route passes through Pořešín. The blue-marked route from Kaplice and this route have different focuses: one leads to Pořešín, while the other incorporates the castle into a larger route. In addition to Pořešín, you can also discover Hradiště.
