Kalsching – Church, Monument Zone and Blanský les

Kalsching combines an impressive local history with a protected landscape and a clearly described cycling route. Chvalšiny is located in the Blanský les Protected Landscape Area and is designated as an urban monument zone.

Historic Townscapes and Notable Buildings

The Church of St. Mary Magdalene was built between 1487 and 1507 in the late Gothic style and is considered an important work of the Rosenberg building workshop. When planning a visit, it is important to note that it is usually accessible only during regular Sunday services. Its architectural history can therefore be combined particularly well with a walk through the historic town area, without assuming open access outside these times. The dating makes the building a clearly distinguishable historic destination within the townscape.

A defining feature of the town is the large spindle-shaped square in Chvalšiny. It is approximately 530 metres long and extends from the stream at a right angle up a gentle slope. The square is also home to the pillory with the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk: a four-sided granite column with bevelled edges dating from 1690. The pillory is one of the few surviving examples and thus offers an unusual historical detail for exploring the town. Its elongated shape also defines the visit: from the stream, the square leads at a right angle up the gentle slope. This spatial sequence allows the pillory to be viewed not only as an individual monument, but also as part of the historic squarescape.

Museum and Landscape of the Blanský les

The Schwarzenberg Floating Canal Museum is located in a carefully restored historic building on the square in the municipality of Chvalšiny. The exhibitions provide information about the nature and natural monuments of the Šumava. In this way, the museum complements the architectural and local history with a landscape perspective on the region. Chvalšiny also serves as a starting point for paths towards the Blanský les. You can therefore give your stay different emphases: the town area represents history and monument preservation, while the surroundings provide access to a protected landscape. The visit thus combines a building on the square with themes that extend beyond Chvalšiny into the Šumava.

A Cycling Route from Chvalšiny

For a more active excursion, the “Rediscovered Kájovsko–Boleticko” cycling route leads from Chvalšiny via Cycle Route 1139. It forms an approximately 20-kilometre circular route and runs exclusively along existing marked cycle paths and Class III roads. The approximate length and circular route provide concrete guidance for planning the day; at the same time, the route remains clearly separate from unsupported claims about travel time or difficulty. The circular form makes it easier to classify it as a continuous day tour without assuming a specific travel time. The combination of marked cycle paths and Class III roads describes the route more precisely than a blanket classification and helps convey it as a clearly defined connection through the landscape. For planning purposes, the approximate distance remains the fixed point of reference.
