Staré Sedlo between mining and castle history

The Dědičná štola Jana Křtitele is particularly characteristic. This cultural monument was created for the extraction of raw materials and the drainage of the mines, and it continues to serve as a means of diverting mine water into the Ohře. The portal is located near a suspension bridge below Staré Sedlo Castle. Here, the technical history of mining and the castle’s striking location come together at a historic site.

Staré Sedlo Castle was built in 1816 by Fr. Miessl, the then head of the mineral works. It stands on a rock above the valleys of the Ohře and the Hruškovský potok. In front of the castle is a statue of Saint Florian from the workshop of the Loket sculptor Wildt; it originally stood in a niche in the castle. The Svaté Trojice mineral works also point to an even older industrial past: the first reference dates from 1573. It was the oldest works in the Sokolov area for producing alum and green vitriol.

Church, places of remembrance, and cultural traces

The Church of the Holy Trinity, called kostel Nejsvětější Trojice in Czech, was originally built between 1711 and 1720 in the Baroque style. After the devastating village fire of September 4, 1861, in which it burned down completely, it was restored the following year, 1862, in a pseudo-historic style. The church thus combines different historical phases of construction. Today, it is associated not only with regular services and festive events but, with the support of the municipality, also serves as a venue for cultural events and concerts.

In the northeastern part of the village, there are also the heavily damaged remains of a fortification. Two details concerning the memorial to those who fell in the First World War recall more recent history: it was erected in 1925 by the local association of war veterans and extensively reconstructed in 2008.

The Ohře Valley and a cycle route as landscape themes

The Ohře Valley natural monument near Staré Sedlo was designated in 1976 and covers 32.84 hectares. The protected valley contains numerous pseudokarst caves as well as fossils of subtropical Tertiary flora. Alongside the architectural and mining heritage, this adds a landscape theme that connects geological history with former worlds of vegetation.

The National Cycle Route No. 6 is also relevant for further travel planning. Its Mostov–Loket section runs through the Staré Sedlo area.
