A Village Green Steeped in History

Lom u Tachova reveals its distinctive character right in the village center: the settlement is arranged around a large, circular village green. At its edge stands a late Baroque chapel from 1819, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary was restored in 2004. Its façade features a niche with a statue of Saint Florian—one detail that can easily become your own small discovery while exploring the village green.

The history of the village goes back considerably further. Lom u Tachova was first mentioned in writing in 1379. On the road to Brod nad Tichou, in front of house no. 47, stands a late Gothic wayside shrine dated 1594. The stone structure is called “Boží muka” and has a polygonal pillar and a superstructure crowned by a donkey-back arch. Behind house no. 25, a barrel-vaulted cellar and low earth elevations visible in its surroundings are considered possible remnants of the former fortress. It is precisely such scattered traces that make the village interesting for visitors who prefer discovering historical details directly in the village landscape rather than only in an exhibition.

From the Former Mill Site to a Special Discovery

Another notable place is the Lomský mlýn. It was mentioned as early as 1615 and formerly bore the name Birlmühle. The surviving mill site is used for recreation and can be reached via the road from Lom to Klíčov. In front of the Lomský mlýn has stood a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from the workshop of G. Böhm since 1829. The granite sculpture is 280 cm high, while the figure itself measures 94 cm. The mill site therefore offers not only a historic name, but also a clearly recognizable artistic and architectural detail for an outing.

There is also a circular stone stele near the railway crossing. It depicts a sword, a severed hand and cross symbols. Together with the wayside shrine, the chapel and the traces of the former fortress, it creates a village landscape in which different periods can be read within a small area, without requiring the individual features to be combined into a single attraction.

Cycling on Route 2138

For active days, the signposted cycling route 2138 offers a practical way to include Lom u Tachova in a longer ride. The route is 55 km long and runs from Mariánské Lázně via Lom u Tachova to Přední Zahájí. It follows roads as well as local and farm tracks. Along the way, paved, surfaced and unsurfaced sections alternate. The route is classified as moderately difficult and is suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. Those looking for accommodation in Lom u Tachova can therefore consider the village either a destination for historical discoveries or a stop along a designated cycling route, without having to combine the two types of travel.
