Trpísty – High Baroque Castle and Landscape

Trpísty combines an exceptional example of West Bohemian architecture with a landscape shaped by the Úterský potok, meadows, forests and a canyon. If you would like to combine culture and nature on your trip, the area offers several clearly distinct points of interest: Zámek Trpísty Castle with its historic surroundings, cycling routes and various landscape features within the municipality.

Zámek Trpísty Castle and its Baroque history

Zámek Trpísty Castle stands on the site of a medieval fortress belonging to the Lords of Gutštejn. Its present appearance was created in 1729 according to plans by the architect Jakub Auguston Jr. for the owner of the estate, Prosper of Sinzendorf. This makes it possible to trace, in one place, the transition from a medieval fortified site to a representative castle complex.

From an architectural-historical perspective, Zámek Trpísty is an outstanding example of High Baroque architecture in West Bohemia and is also part of the broader context of 18th-century Central European Baroque architecture. For your cultural orientation, it is therefore not only the building itself that is of interest, but also its place in the architectural history of the region. The complex also includes a castle garden and a park, which complement the castle grounds with landscaped outdoor areas.

A special detail can be found in the castle's house chapel, Panny Marie Pomocné: it contains a painting of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. In the village centre, you will also find a central polygonal masonry chapel on the village square in Trpísty. Both sacred spaces add distinctive accents and complement the castle with smaller, locally specific cultural landmarks.

Cycling route and landscape along the Úterský potok

For active exploration, the cycling route from the village square in Trpísty follows Route 2214 along a field track above the valley towards Sviňomazy. The route described connects the starting point in the village with a course above the valley, making the landscape visible as part of your orientation in the area. Zámek Trpísty Castle is also one of the attractions along the “Úterský potok all the way to Trpísty” cycling route.

The Úterský potok is also a defining landscape feature, independently of the cultural monuments. Along its entire northeastern boundary, the administrative territory of Trpísty includes a section of the Úterský potok canyon. The regional biocentre RBC Trpísty also extends partly into the municipality; it includes riparian vegetation, meadows and forests.

Here, the ecological corridor of the Úterský potok includes, among other things, natural river channels and their riparian vegetation, wetlands with marsh thistles, alluvial forests, rocky vegetation, bilberry pine forests and acidophilous beech forests. These components are for the most part only partially functional, while in some places they are fully functional. This precise classification is part of the distinctive character of the landscape and prevents it from being described simplistically as a uniform natural area.
