Tisová – Birdlife, Ponds and History

Tisová appeals to visitors who wish to combine nature observation and regional history in a manageable travel destination. The village lies in a flat landscape with meadows, forests and ponds. It is also home to a nature reserve with remarkable bird diversity and the distinctive architectural history of St. Nicholas Church.

Ponds, Wetlands and Birdwatching

The Tisovské rybníky Nature Reserve is located in the surroundings of Tisová and Jemnice. It protects a system of ponds and adjacent wetland ecosystems. The focus is therefore not just on a single body of water, but on a contiguous landscape whose different habitats play an important role during a nature-oriented stay.

Birdwatching is particularly interesting here: up to 150 bird species can be spotted at Tisovské rybníky. Those who take time to appreciate the landscape will therefore find a concrete reason not to view the area merely as a place to pass through.

St. Nicholas Church and Its Multifaceted History

A second focus is the local history. St. Nicholas Church was built in the first half of the 18th century around an older medieval church. This older structure remained part of the building, making the church a place where different construction phases come together.

The earlier St. Nicholas Church probably already stood in Tisová in the 13th century. It was built in the Early Gothic style and structurally connected to a nearby fortified residence. This cautious dating and the preserved connection to the older structure give the visit historical depth, without reducing the church to a single era.

There is also a distinctive detail inside: in the centre of the church is the entrance to the Born family crypt. The crypt was used at the end of the 18th century. In addition, a monument to 48 victims of the First World War stands beside the church. Thus, medieval architectural history, the development of the church building and the commemoration of a later historical event meet in one place.

Visiting and Finding Your Way Around

When planning a visit to the church, please bear in mind its limited opening hours. St. Nicholas is normally closed and opens to the public only during services. For an individual visit, guests can enquire at the municipal office about the keys and arrange to be shown around the church. This makes the visit significantly different from freely accessible attractions and should be taken into account when planning the day.
