Líšná: Řebřík Castle Ruins and Historical Discoveries

Between Upland, Fields, and Forest

Líšná lies on an elevated plateau at about 525 m above sea level. Fields surround the village, with extensive forests stretching beyond them. This landscape provides the setting for a stay that combines village history, castle research, and longer walks. The connection between Líšná and the ruins of Řebřík Castle is particularly impressive: they lie 2 km northwest of the village and can be reached via the green-marked trail.

The Řebřík Castle Ruins and Their Vanished Surroundings

The history of the castle dates back to the beginning of the 14th century. Řebřík had already begun to fall into disrepair by the end of the 15th century; the castle probably finally disappeared, together with the nearby village of the same name, at the beginning of the 16th century.

The castle core was dominated by a three-part palace. There were also two outer baileys, separated from the castle core by massive moats. Traces of the economic surroundings have also survived: these include a farmyard, a quarry, and a pond. A connecting route can be identified in the form of sunken lanes. This gives you a differentiated view of the site, in which not only its former defensive architecture but also its economic context plays a role.

Today, the only reminder of the vanished village of Řebřík, located below the castle, is the Church of St. Peter and Paul, which dates from around the mid-14th century. The Way of the Cross by Adriana Skálová is located by this church; occasional classical music concerts are also held there. The Church of St. Peter in the Řebřík locality also contains gravestones from the original church of the vanished village of Řebřík. The past, visual art, sacred sites, and music come together here within a closely connected thematic setting.

Village Church and the “From Castle to Castle” Route

Líšná itself also offers a historic point of interest. The Church of St. Wenceslas on the village square dates from 1869. The “From Castle to Castle” route passes this church and is considered moderately difficult. The entire route takes up to 610 minutes. In addition to the shorter path to Řebřík Castle, this provides a significantly more extensive hiking option if you would like to combine your stay in Líšná with a longer cultural and scenic tour.

The forest lodge Na Chrastech is also part of the surroundings of this route. The sister of the young painter Mikuláš Aleš stayed there. This detail broadens the perspective beyond the castle’s history to include a biographical trace from art history. Travelers with different interests can thus combine historic buildings, landscape, and individual cultural-historical references in a single day’s itinerary without reducing the village’s themes to a single attraction.
