Castle and protected landscape

Zbiroh lies on the border between the Křivoklátsko and Brdy Protected Landscape Areas. Zbiroh Castle offers guided tours of its historic interiors. Those who wish to combine the castle, local history and nature trails during their stay will find several clearly distinct themes to choose from. This makes it possible to combine historic interiors, local history and trails according to the preferred daily schedule.

Museums and local history

The J. V. Sládek Museum and the Zbiroh Municipal Museum are located at the original site of the poet’s birthplace. Using furniture and furnishings from his Prague apartment, as well as twelve chronologically arranged panels, the permanent exhibition at the J. Sládek Museum presents the poet’s private life. The Zbiroh Municipal Museum focuses on the development of ironmaking, crafts and guilds in the Zbiroh area, the now-defunct nail-making trade, and the business activities of B. H. Strousberg, the “King of the Railways”. The exhibition thus leads from the poet’s personal living environment to the broader economic and craft history of the Zbiroh area.

St. Nicholas Parish Church in Zbiroh is documented as a Gothic church as early as 1364. It was extensively rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1716 and renovated in 1883 and 1921. The church adds a building with several clearly dated phases of development to this historical focus.

Educational trails through Zbiroh

The “Zbirožské vyhlídky” educational trail begins at the information centre and follows a red-marked hiking trail to the castle gate of Zbiroh Castle. Five stations divide the route. The “Toulky Starým Zbirohem” educational trail begins at the information centre on Masaryk Square and initially follows a green-marked hiking trail. The first station beyond the bridge over the Zbirožský potok stream presents the history of Zbiroh. The five stations structure the route and provide additional stops between the information centre and the castle gate.

The “Trůn krále železnic” educational trail is 6.5 km long and has eight stations. It leads from the square in Zbiroh via the railway embankment of the former Strousberg Railway to a pond near the settlement of V Čápu. The different route lengths help you compare the trails according to their respective distances.

Cycling route, tavern and vineyard

Zbiroh Castle is part of a popular cycling route through the Křivoklát Highlands. The castle tavern in Zbiroh serves boiled beef with horseradish sauce and other specialities in an authentic medieval setting. The vineyard in the English park of Zbiroh Castle produces wine that can be purchased at the visitor centre or in the castle tavern. The boiled beef, wine and historic castle surroundings provide different highlights for an enjoyable break during your visit.

Getting there and choosing where to stay

When choosing accommodation, you can consider whether Zbiroh suits a stay combining culture and marked trails. If travelling by car, Zbiroh is 6 km from the D5 exit towards Prague–Pilsen. Kařez railway stop can be reached by bus. The location near the D5 and the bus connection from Kařez therefore provide two concrete transport options for your further planning.
