Smědčice: Culture, Trails and the Klabava

Smědčice combines a remarkable local history with paths through the surrounding area and distinctive structures. The focal point is the Chapel of St. Wenceslas, but archaeological traces, a cycling route and the railway bridge over the Klabava also reveal different sides of the village. This allows you to shape your stay around cultural history, an active circuit and a focused exploration along the river.

Cultural history in the village centre

The Chapel of St. Wenceslas is a small religious building in the Romantic eclectic style. Its design combines Gothic, Baroque and Empire elements. Its location is particularly striking: the chapel stands in the middle of Smědčice village green and is also classified as an immovable cultural monument.

In the village centre lies an archaeological site containing a settlement and fortress site whose history extends from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The history of Smědčice dates back to 1243, when Abraham de Zmedcich was associated with the village. The fortress, probably founded only at the beginning of the 16th century, is mentioned for 1544 and 1550, and possibly for 1553. By 1581, it was already uninhabited and in ruins. This sequence makes the village centre a place where the development of the village can be understood not only through surviving structures but also through archaeological traces.

Further historical features include the extensive and well-preserved tumulus cemetery of Smědčice. It is one of the largest and most significant of its kind in the region. Together with the chapel and the archaeological site, it forms a clear cultural focus for anyone who wants to get to know a place through its history.

A circular trail and cycling route for different day plans

For a longer tour, the 35-kilometre Chrást–Strašice cycle route combines 2153 physical activity with a specific cultural destination. The route has 250 metres of elevation gain. A chapel in Smědčice is listed as a point of interest along the route.

A shorter way to explore the landscape is provided by the 9-kilometre Kokotské rybníky circular trail in the vicinity of Smědčice and Litohlavy. The trail has 11 information stations and is accessible on foot and by bicycle. As an educational trail, it runs between Smědčice and Litohlavy. To reach it, you can take the train to Smědčice and then use a 1.5-kilometre walking route to the ponds. This makes the excursion clearly different from the longer cycling route: here, the sequence of stations and the connection between the two villages are the main focus.

The Klabava and its railway bridge

Another distinctive point lies on the Klabava. The riveted steel structure of the railway bridge consists of three separate inverted arches. The bridge near Smědčice belongs to the Radnice–Chrást line. A wide path on the left bank of the Klabava leads to a point approximately 20 metres from the railway bridge; along the way, you reach an observation peninsula. This section therefore offers a separate, clearly defined walk between the riverbank, viewpoint and engineering structure.
