Sebečice – History, Nature and Trails Around Biskoupky

Sebečice combines historical traces, geological features and marked trails around Biskoupky. This creates a destination where you can combine a cultural tour of the village, a viewpoint and longer hiking sections. The transition between village history and landscape is particularly interesting: Biskoupky is home to both the remains of a former fortress and a classic fossil site from the Middle Cambrian.

Historical Traces in Sebečice and Biskoupky

The first written mention of Sebečice dates from 1359. Biskoupky, a part of the municipality of Sebečice, is first mentioned in written records in 1445. The history of this part of the municipality also includes Biskoupky Fortress: it was already uninhabited when it was sold in 1573. The remains of the fortress can be found at Farmyard No. 1, providing a tangible location for exploring the area’s history.

There is also a small cultural and historical landmark in the center of Sebečice. The Chapel of Saint Margaret stands beside a pond on the village square. The former school building in Sebečice was converted into a multifunctional building with a grocery store and a restaurant. For a stay in which you want to experience not only nature but also the local character, these details are closer to village life than the more distant hiking destinations.

Biskoupky Nature Monument and Lookout Tower

The Biskoupky Nature Monument is located in the cadastral area of Biskoupky in the municipality of Sebečice. It is a classic fossil site from the Middle Cambrian. Exposed here are sediments of the Skryje-Týřovice Cambrian containing fossils. This gives the site a geological focus that clearly differs from the historical traces of the fortress.

The Biskoupky u Sebečic lookout tower is a metal tower built in 2019. It stands on the western edge of the Biskoupky settlement below Bašovka Hill and has an observation platform for tourists. The lookout tower is freely accessible year-round; visitors climb it at their own risk. This makes it possible for families with different interests to combine a trip with a historical or geological discovery without mixing the two themes.

Marked Trails and Special Hiking Destinations

A circular hike from Sebečice initially follows the blue-marked trail to Chotětín. It then continues along the red-marked trail to the U Zámečku junction and along the green-marked trail past the vanished settlement of Rovný to the Pod Babskou skálou junction. The blue-marked trail then leads back to Sebečice past the abandoned castle site on Babská skála Hill. The route therefore connects several specific waypoints: a vanished settlement, an abandoned castle site and sections with different trail markings.

The climb to the Babská skála viewpoint follows an almost seven-kilometer section. It begins at the weekend cottage area below Drahoňův Újezd and includes a short descent in Sebečice. This distinguishes the route from the circular hike via Chotětín and Rovný.

The New Year’s hiking day from Biskoupky via Sebečice to a viewpoint and back takes place every year. On January 1, 2023, the route led from Biskoupky via Sebečice to Bašovka and ended with light refreshments. In the wider region around Sebečice, the Alp Rieser family farm on the edge of Křivoklátsko offers encounters with alpacas and other animals, goat milking, as well as courses in spinning on a spinning wheel and felting wool.
